What do you do when you are away?

Dear all, I am wondering what do you do if you have to be out and not able to give the next insulin dose? Right now Tommy gets a shot at 7 am and at 7pm at night and I have been faithful with that. I have an event in 2 weeks that I must go to and I have no one by me who would be able to follow-up with the evening shot.

Do I intentionally not give him the shot or do I rearrange the shot times?

Thank! Mimi & Tommy

Someone on another thread suggested asking one of the techs at your vet's office. I thought that was a GREAT idea!

Yeah, I have read of people that do that and I would consider it if I went on vacation and had no one for a few days to take care of him. I live in NJ and my vet is in NYC, it wouldn't be feasable for just one dose. I will probably skip the dose as long as that is the right way to go.

Thank you for posting! I appreciate all comments and advice. MImi & Tommy

I would give a smaller than usual dose when you do get home if it's several hours later rather than none. I use Lantus. What do you use?

There are some NJ members here. Perhaps one of them lives nearby and can give the insulin and test bgs for you. You can edit the sbjuect of your first post for this thread to catch the attention of other NJ members.

How much later than normal will you be able to give the shot?
A couple times during the week, I do not get home until about 3 hours after Ricky's normal shot time. I give him his regular dose. If possible, I try to give the next dose a little later than normal and gradually back the doses back to the normal time. But I also test before every dose, so as long it as at least 10 hours since the last shot and his BG is high enough to shoot, I will normally give him his shot if I cannot delay it to a later time.

Tommy is on Lantus and it would be approximately 5-7 hours after his regular time. I always check his glucose levels prior to giving him his insulin. I am leaning towards skipping the shot alltogether only because I prefer to keep his shots at his current time becuase it works so well with my work-commute schedule. In the meantime, I am trying figure a plan B with friends/family who might be able to swing by and test/shoot him.

Thank you all for your posts, I appreciate the feedback always.

Tommy & Mimi
