Yes I know. An itch.

But what are some of the causes and concerns.
I'll be taking Shadow to the vets on Monday. I would like to be armed with more information than that single question.

Thanks guys.

Anal glands - blocked and/or infected

Parasites - worms tend to cause some allergic response.

Food allergies - you'd likely see some fur loss on the belly, too.

I was thinking tapeworm myself. I could swear they used a broad spectrum dewormer. I'll have to ask them.

He seems to be good with the food as long as I stay away from fish. No excessive scratching or hair loss. His coat has begun to soften up and become quite shiny.
The handsome little creature is sleeping between my keyboard and monitor at the moment.

Sometimes you have to worm twice.

You can always take a fresh fecal specimen and break it apart on some wax paper - your chances are pretty good you'll see the tapes - they look like white rice.

With Mikey, it's a sign his fur bloomers have grown too long and he's in need of a kitty brazilian.

HI Sev!

What causes a cat to drag its butt across a surface?

Their butt itches.

The times I have seen that with any of my cats, it has been due to tapeworms in each case. Haven't had that problem with Polly yet, and hopefully won't.

I have a fat cat named Jack who is diabetic and cannot clean his butt so he drags it across the carpet once in a while. Although impacted glands and worms are most likely. Check his but for dingleberries after the litter box!

Mocha only drags when has consumed some of my hair (~2 ft long) by accident and he is having trouble passing it. Often there is no "dingleberry" as a give away that it's there. I usually have to catch him and take a closer look for the hair, which is hard to see. :?

My cats do it to wipe their butt when a little poop is stuck back there. Always ready with the Resolve bottle

Yup on the poop thing...I noticed that Mittens started doing it when I switched him over to a canned food diet (softer poo).
Thank goodness for Resolve.

On a slightly off topic note, when Mittens has a "dingleberry" stuck back there-he will run throughout the house like something is chasing him attempting to "get away" from it...so then I have to get a paper towel & track him down to get it off of him...how's that for a visual??

LOL.
Got to love the humor.

Ok.
No dingle berry's evident. The feces are solid like they should be in the wild. Just over odorous.
I dont have long flowing tresses. (@ Mocha's Mom. And why is the cat grazing on your hair?).
KPassa. Your in charge of the Brazillian if it comes to that. I'll have the video recorder rolling. :-D
BJM. I'll ask the vet about the glandular infection and blockage.

Mind you Shadow is not doing this all the time and continually from what I have observed.
