What are normal, acceptable and too high levels of ketones?

Hi everyone,

Angie hasn't had an issue with ketones while the vet was testing. I was just advised to test for ketones in Lantus Land. Angie's ketones were 1.8 mg/dL. This seems low to me but I only have information on what human levels should look like. Could anyone tell me what normal, acceptable and elevated ketone levels would be? I'm not sure what I'm looking for!

Thanks,

Grace

Ideally, we want to see none. It may be time to see the vet.

I'll note that the test values on the spreadsheet are mostly blue and green for 1 week's data which is quite encouraging. The most recent one I see is 122. To me this suggests DKA is unlikely; though not impossible.

Are you testing blood or urine? Urine reflects the accumulation over several hours, and may become more elevated if there is dehydration.

Is she eating & drinking? Peeing & pooping normally? Behaving normally? Or is something 'off'?

Diabetic ketoacidosis cannot be managed at home.

Testing blood in mmol/L - she was 0.1 mmol/L which I multiplied by 18 to get 1.8. I assume that is still the correct conversion.

She is eating, drinking, toileting and acting normally. Nothing seems amis at the moment, she missed two doses of insulin though as she had a low on Sunday and we took the opportunity to switch her to wet food.
