Our cat Caesar has been a diabetic for over 2 years now. When he was diagnosed in June 2012, we joined this forum for a while and then came and went. He was OTJ within a year. After about 5 months of that, his numbers started climbing. Oddly enough, it was especially after we had switched him to a NO carb dry (Young Again). We now know switching his food was a HUGE mistake, but.. done is done. We had been close to regulation and very close to him being OTJ when suddenly...it all stopped going our way. His numbers are out of whack, no rhyme or reason.. and we feel a bit frazzled and frantic.

He is on Lantus (as he has always been) 1U 2x day. He eats Fancy Feast classic (salmon and chicken only). He does have anal gland issues and I know we have been told he needs some dental attention that we can't get to yet. We have tried going UP on his dosage, but his BG seems to follow. (up). We decided to lower when he was giving flat curves and surmised that the somogyi effect was to blame so we lowered his dose. No real change..perhaps slight.

An interesting note.. when we started being home less due to work schedules, this is when his BG started to rise. We cannot change this, so we are just...frustrated. He was doing so well... confused_cat
We have a civi named Nezz. He is 11. Caesar is 12. We have had them both since 5 weeks of age. Just started with a new vet in a new state (just moved a year ago). Not sure if we are happy with her.
Not sure where to go from here.

I had good numbers on Lantus with my Alska - until I didn't have good numbers anymore. There was no rhyme or reason, it just changed. I never did figure out a proper dosage on Lantus either. Go up - numbers go up. Go down - numbers still go up.

I switched to Levemir.

Now Alska's numbers are good again and he is a happier cat on Levemir. He was moody and just slept all the time on Lantus - now he is livelier and happier. Levemir is also water-based so no more stinging during the shot. This greatly helped our test and shoot routine.

Thanks for your reply. Perhaps we are in need of a change. Curious thing is: this particular new bottle seems to have no effect. Our old bottle was giving us good numbers.....???
