hi all, my Cat Monkey was diagnosed yesterday with diabetes. She is very finicky , only ate her dry food. i have tried a few different types of wet food and she is not eating at all. She likes canned tuna so i have been giving her some as vet said ok for today but not an ongoing meal.
Any ideas on wet food ?
Yvette

It was not easy for us to transition to wet food either. I had to try MANY different kinds before finding any they would eat at all. Then, they would decide they did not like one they seemed to like for a day or two. So, back to the drawing board. I found that adding home cooked bone broth and chicken breast meat to their meals helped. Also, for Mia, I had to add kibbles (either crushed or whole) on top of her wet food for months until I could get her to eat without it. I just made sure I had low-carb dry food. I think the texture difference is the biggest hurdle to get over.

I have been feeding my girls Weruva Chicken Frick A' Zee for several months now. When I first introduced it to them, they would not eat it. They would only eat Fancy Feast Classic Chicken pate and Sheba Perfect Portions chicken pate in the beginning. Once they were used to wet food, I re-introduced the Weruva, and they have eaten it ever since. Again, I think the texture was the problem in the beginning. There is a link in my signature to the Cat Food Database compiled by Dr Pierson. It is very helpful when you are looking for foods to try. Dr P recommends "start with protein minimum of 40, fat maximum of 50, carb max of 10, and for cats with kidney issues....phos less than 300."

Thank you so much . My other one keeps eating the wet food Monkey is not eating !
Wonder if I can make chicken breast with broth . Any ideas on home cooked food ?
She’s super picky !

You can visit www.catinfo.org for a discussion on wet food for felines. The same person, Dr. Lisa, has compiled the Food Chart that is available on the board. Lots of good information about wet food and preparing home cooked nutritionally complete food.

it can be a process to get the kitty to eat wet food. On the catinfo.org website search for Tips for Transitioning Dry Food Addicts to Canned Food. One thing that you need to know, if you are shooting insulin, making the change from dry to all wet will lower the BG, and you need to be testing and watching for the changes. Please create a signature so we know what the pertinent information on Monkey is, here is a link on how to do that: SIGNATURE

Hi, I'm in Alberta. Try Fancy Feast classic chicken pate. My cat was a big dry food fan and he loves it. Best of all, it's everywhere, easy to get, cheap and low carb!

And yes, an all-wet food diet really does drop the blood glucose levels. Are you home testing Monks?

She was just diagnosed this week . So first insulin w vet yesterday and on my own w a friend last night . This morning on my own . So have to take her in this afternoon so he can see if the correct amount of insulin . This is a lot to handle . Have not tested blood yet ! All new to me and still in shock mode .
Problem I am having is she needs to eat and if I only isceating tuna past few days now eating chicken in broth thavkfully . She didn’t touch wet food again today and I out kibbles on top . I guess I have to be patient ..
Thanks everyone !

We've been using Stella & Chewy freeze dried nuggets when Grandpa won't eat wet food. I originally bought some as dog treats and was shocked when Grandpa ate one dry. He loved it. So I bought some for him and soak them in warm water. I don't mush them up like the bag suggests. He likes to eat them in nugget form. If you feed them dry, you need to make sure the cat drinks plenty of water. Over the past few days, this is all he will eat reliably. Only 2% carbs.

Beck, which recipe is that? I am looking at them and there is chicken, game bird and carnivore crunch (beef)

The first he liked was Duck, Duck, Goose. I bought the turkey and the cod/salmon, too. He seems to like all of them.

It took me awhile to switch over Gertrude from dry food to wet food. She's very picky. :banghead: I finally found out that she only eats Friskies/Blue Buffalo meat flavored wet food. (Like chicken, beef, turkey, etc. She absolutely hates fish flavors!) While trying to get her over, I threw in a small handful of her dry food into her wet food. I fed her 3-4 times each day. Eventually, their natural hunger should drive them to eat. Have you tried a tuna flavored cat food? Or a fish flavored wet food in general? Theres dry food out there that has low carbs (I can't think of any off the top of my head, I'm someone will help me out) that you could possibly mix with the wet food.

If you want to make food at home, one easy way is with the foodfurlife.com supplement powder. They will even send you a sample so you can make a small batch at home and see if your kitties are interested. It's super easy. You just buy a protein (chicken, turkey, lamb, etc.) at the grocery, then blend it up with some water and the powder. I can make a weeks' food in about 15 minutes - less time than it takes to drive to the store and buy them food.

I've also been feeding some of the vital essentials patties and my guys love them! The company has been wonderful at promptly sharing all of their nutrition information so I could verify that it was safe for diabetics (all flavors are good). They sell both frozen and freeze-dried. I always worry about recommending freeze-dried as it's is way way way too low in moisture, so if you go that route, please do add some water to it. Our kitties have very sensitive kidneys and urinary tracts.
