Hi,

My coco was diagnosed with diabetes last week after having (what we assume) was a hypoglycemic event. The vet said her glucose numbers were over 500. i found her at 4am basically staggering around and could barely walk, she was shivering at times. They gave her inulin and within a couple hours was better. Ill try and make another post with the full story and better numbers when I can. For now, question regarding food.

About 3 months ago she was diagnosed with stage 2 kidney disease and was recommended to switch to a Kidney diet. I have since switched to the Hills KD (chicken pate) wet food and Royal Canin dry food. Its really been about 85% wet and the other 15% dry, so shes already used to mostly wet and since last week, I've weened her off the dry. The vet recommended to stick with the Kidney food for now since there isn't much else to help the kidneys. But if I read correctly, the Hills KD wet is about 38% carbs?

Its extremely confusing looking at the nutritional value off pet food and my brain is already fired so looking for some assistance. Per one site I visited, it recommended to stick with these figures when choosing a diet for kidney disease;

Protein 28 - 35%
Phosphorus 0.3 - 0.6% OR <250 mg of phosphate per 100 kcal
Sodium ≤0.4%
Omega-3 fatty acids 0.4 - 2.5%

Does a food exist that can assist with the kidneys but be low enough in carbs to be good for diabetics?

Thanks,

Hi and welcome to the forum David and Coco
A cat can’t have a hypoglycaemic episode if she is not on insulin. Maybe she had ketones in the urine. Did the vet mention those?
I’m glad you are looking for a better food for Coco. Yes, there are foods available that are low phosphorus and low carbs which is what you need. At stage 2 crd you don’t need low protein…that is old thinking. The new thinking is they need low phosphorus and high protein to maintain muscle mass. Low protein is for end stage crd.
Is she eating well?
FOOD CHART
Look for foods that are 200mg phosphorus/100 kcals or less and carbs 10%or lower.
Also Weruva has a new lot of low phosphorus low carb foods out
https://weruva.com/nutrition-landing/wx-phosphorus-focused-nutrition-information/

Can you tell us what type of insulin and dose you are using please?
Are you going to home testing the blood glucose?
I would strongly recommend you do. Also be careful swapping to a low carb food as the BG can drop up to 100 points with the change over to a low carb diet. This is why it is important to be testing when you do it.

weruva has low carb and low phospherous wet food
With weruva foods
You want the metabolizable energy profile percentage of carbs to be less than 10%, and the phosphorus which Weruva lists in Minerals to be less than 250 mg per 100 cals. So you have to look at two different places in the Weruva charts.

For diabetic cats and cats that have elevated kidney values
