My Rusty has been otj since April 2011, just noticed some of his previous behavior had returned, checked his blood and his BG is 477. Poor guy, I should have noticed sooner. I'm trying to get him an appt asap, is there anything I can do to bring his sugar levels down till I get him some insulin? I have continued feeding him all wet food, friskies pate, since he was diagnosed in 2011.

Welcome back! I'm so sorry to hear Rusty has relapsed! But it's good that you noticed so quickly.

Since he's getting low carb wet food I don't know what else you can do for now. You could try a lowER carb food but I don't know how much difference it would realistically make.

I hope you get a vet appt soon! Let us know how it goes!

Well, just got more info from dh. He says Rusty was begging for food today a little after noon, so he gave him some dry food because he can't stand the smell of the wet
I usually feed them when I get up around 0500, then again when I get home around 5pm. I may have to freeze ahead some wet food and put it out so he can eat on it thru the day as it thaws

Well, that dry food probably contributed to Rusty "falling off the wagon". Wonder how long your hubbie has been sneaking some dry food into Rusty's diet. Please tell your DH no more dry food ever.

You do want to be more aggressive in dosing the second time around. Hope you get some insulin soon.

What insulin are you going to be using?

Believe me, we had that conversation. I will be going to the same vet, so it will probably be prozinc again.

I took Rusty to the vet yesterday, his BG there was 339. Vet said that he has a couple teeth that look red right at the gumline, and I told him that Rusty has been being constipated, he did an abdominal exam and said that he feels backed up, and it might be megacolon, and he said that might have been enough to cause his blood sugar to start going up. He gave him an anti biotic shot for the teeth, a medicine for the colon that i have to give him each day for the next few days, and he gave me 10 doses of PZI, 1 unit. He said to keep monitoring like I do and give him 1 unit daily, and I will have to get back to him in a few days to see how he does. I feel pretty good about it, and I love my vet, he is the greatest! He said that he knows that I will monitor and that I know Rusty best, so to keep doing what I am doing!
