Hello,

Nestle has been in remission since June and is doing really well.
Today he had this weird looking poop (see pics below). Very dark (black) but not all throughout. And upon further inspection when I pulled the poop apart I realized the black was fur covered in something black. He acts and looks normal and I've never seen something like this before.
Is this an emergency? Any help will be appreciated.

Cats don't digest their fur when they groom; it's meant to be excreted via feces. That being said; that is a lot of hair in your cats stool. Here's a page I found explaining things a bit more: https://www.petmd.com/cat/general-health/what-should-my-cats-poop-look.

Here is a quote: "Hair is the most common item noticed in stool, and if it’s not excessive, then this is totally normal,” Waldrop says. If you find large amounts of hair in your cat’s poop, it can be an indication that the cat is over-grooming, he explains, which can be associated with anxiety, itchy skin, or diseases causing excessive shedding. I would take your cat to the vet to make sure there's nothing wrong. The black stuff on the fur COULD be dried up blood from higher up in the GI tract. It could also just be what happens to cat fur when it gets put through the digestive system.

In any case I would take your cat to the vet just to make sure everythings okay.

Hope things are okay! If it’s been normal since these pictures it’s possible your cat just had a lot of hair from a long grooming session it needed to digest, that didn’t end up getting puked as a hairball. Is Nestle a long hair breed? My sam is long hair (Norwegian forrest cat according to my vet); he grooms for at least an hour a day. Every month he has a hairball.

Today i went to pet him; his entire undercoat (it’s called a ruff in his type of long hair breeds; almost like a sheep’s wool, very curly) was wet as he had been grooming! When living on his own he doesn’t have a short hair cat to groom him, so he ingests a lot of hair. I’ve seen hair in his poop once in the last year; that was actually last week. The vet said it would happen sometimes in very long haired cats like sam.

His poop has been pretty much normal since then.
We are going to the vet tomorrow just to get him checked out anyways and I'm bringing his poop sample and the pictures I took.
Hopefully all is well.

How are you and Tyler? :cat::bighug:
Hi Karolina, glad to hear that , let us know how the vet visit goes tomorrow
Tyler is doing good , thanks for asking :bighug::bighug::cat:

UPDATE:

Vet visit went well. The vet said Nestle is doing amazing, he's very impressed with his BG #s.
His check up turned up nothing. We did blood test as well but the results are good.
As for the poop, vet said to keep an eye on it but since it's been normal since then it was prob a once off and he prob just ingested more fur than usual from grooming himself as well as his brother, Peanut.

I'm happy after and vet visit as it put my mind on ease but I will continue to monitor his poop to make sure it's not happening again.

Thanks for the info. Nestle is a short hair but he grooms himself as well as his brother so I'm assuming it was an intense grooming session that led to this.

Since then his poop has been normal and I've been brushing them every day to prevent further issues.
