Chance received his 3.5 units of prozinc at 8pm last night pre shot blood sugar was 285. He was in the blue almost all night. this morning at 08 am he was 172. Held insulin and fed him. rechecked 20 minutes later and he was 191. waited another 20 minutes and he was 186. Again waited 20 minutes and he was 195. Decided to skip the am insulin as I was going out of town for a bit and he has been in the blue all day. Going to monitor the same way for 8 pm tonight. Just weird for a high cat to normalize like that with a history of being high?

update: Chance was reading blue all day. Decided to do a blood glucose as it's very strange and was hesitant to miss two insulin injections. Blood test says 456. repeated blood test in other ear for comparison and was 462. called the libre technical support line and let them know i was not happy with this. They are sending me a new sensor for free but lesson learned. next time it's weird for him, go for blood right away. Technology is great but it is not perfect.

As a nurse, I like the thought behind it. Anything to make life a little easier on diabetics. I feel technology still has a ways to go with this. I'll try the new free sensor but I will be more guarded with it. The first time I get a funky reading, i will do blood. I don't trust it as much. Not worth endangering my cat's life. Will I buy another one? Not really sure. It's a lot easier to get quick readings. It's very expensive for malfunctions and could potentially be dangerous.

This is my main complaint about the Libres. People are "sold" on them and take a lot of comfort knowing they can easily scan and keep an eye. The problem is - and this is just from what I've seen - half the time they are accurate, half the time they aren't. Some people for whatever reason always have luck with them (or perhaps never bother to double check after the first few), but I can also give you a handful in your situation. Something didn't make sense, they started comparing, and drastically different numbers. Frustrating for sure (cost, possible danger), because I do think it's a wonderful option for a lot of people.

I agree. It can provide a false sense of comfort. I was more comforted by it i admit. Much easier than poking an ear especially just starting out with a newly diagnosed cat. The vet made it sound great. Almost like a game changer. I think it could be more dangerous especially depending on education level of the people using it. If anything, I think a newly diagnosed human or animal should be blood checked over the libre for awhile. At least until you have comfort (proficiency) with that. then as the human/animal stabilizes a little more than maybe you can try the libre. Diabetes is hard enough to manage human or animal so much teaching has to be done continuously. You know this especially working with me!

Just an FYI...

If you get a pre-shot number that is lower than what you're comfortable shooting, post and ask for help. Do not feed your cat. If you feed Chance, the tests are influenced by food. Ideally, you want to not feed, and retest in 20 - 30 minutes to see if numbers are rising.

There is a section in the Prozinc dosing guidelines that addresses what to do when you get a low pre-shot numbers.

I read it but did mess up and feed. I'm so used to humans. Hard to turn to cat logic sometimes. My question is now since chance missed his yesterday am insulin, I have thrown his blood sugars way off and high. He's tolerating fine. How long do you think it will take him to "bounce back" from this and balance out if this makes sense?
