I have already decided to change Louie to Lantus. I took him in for his scheduled curve at the vet on Friday and found that his curve was...awkward. Upside down is what I saw. I took pictures after requesting to see his chart. This is how it looked on his first curve (5.1.15) and his second (5.15.15). What are your thoughts? I have the prescription for Lantus that I will be filling. These curves are on Novolin N.

I have to note that I was fairly disappointed that my vet did not even take the time to talk to me about his curve. I never even saw her. If I wasn't asking questions they would have given me a brief summary (with minimal info), took my money, and sent me on my way. Frustrating to say the least. Trust me when I say that curves will be done in the home from now on.

You'll want to check it when it arrives to make sure it has stayed cool.

What is it with vets? Hardly any of us can find a good one. Not even just the "don't know anything about feline diabetes but pretend we do" problem, but just not TALKING to us. We'd never put up with that nonsense from our own doctors!!

I am not familiar with Novolin N so I can't comment on the curve. However as far as the vet goes I had a similar experience with my first vet. I had a curve done in the beginning, never saw the vet after, was told by the tech that it didn't work out because of how stressed Tuxie was and was not even given the numbers. A few days later I made an appointment to see the vet and ended up seeing the vet tech first. She couldn't answer my questions and said the vet was very busy and din't have time to go over all the questions I had. I WAS paying for the visit, but was so caught off guard that I never brought that up to the tech. I went home, frustrated and almost in tears, wrote up some questions I had and dropped it at the vets. A few days later the tech (AGAIN) called and gave some quick, non-informative answers. Finally I got a new vet who deals directly with me, calls if I have concerns and will do follow-up calls after dental surgery etc.

Home testing is the best way to check how the glucose levels are. I started after the first 10 days, once I learned just how important it is to monitor before shot levels and mid cycle levels. Some kitties, such as my Tuxie, are prone to stress and this will also affect the glucose readings. Doing your own home testing is a win/win situation. It is much cheaper to do a curve at home, you can monitor regularly to see trends and there is very little stress doing it at home.

Lantus and Levemir have both shown good results with many cats. Good luck with your switch!
