I was handing my husband Mister's insulin and we dropped the glass bottle...ON THE HARD TILE FLOOR. We'd only used it for about a month.

I used to administer his insulin on the floor for this reason but my husband said it was unsanitary even though I only put the bottle on the floor and was very careful with the needle.

I'm so upset/sad...

I know they make those soft cases for insulin bottles. I wish we'd researched that more.

Do you think it's ok to administer an injection from the floor to prevent this type of accident? He still thinks it's not ok..

What I do is draw up my dose and put the bottle right back into the fridge, so I don't have to worry about dropping it.

Yep, me too.

I put the insulin and syringe on the kitchen worktop, draw insulin into the syringe, put the insulin away, and then give Bert his shot while he's eating his food on the floor.

I have a little box that I put the insulin in to at the moment. So it travels from the fridge to the worktop in it's box. Then I take it out of the box, fill the syringe, and put the insulin straight back into the box before taking it back to the fridge.

I have also improvised soft coverings for vials by cutting up an old woollen glove. I just cut off two fingers (ouch!), and put one inside the other to make a double layer, and popped the vial in there.

I never used to be very careful with vials, but I too have dropped one onto a hard tiled floor, and at £80 a vial it's an expensive accident... :-|

I also draw my dose and put it right back in the fridge because twice I've forgot about it and left it sitting out all night!!

On trick I found to protect a vial of insulin is to put it in an empty prescription bottle. Stuff cotton or paper towel around it so it fits snug in it and the top of the vial is near the top of the bottle. Then if it does drop, it has some protection to keep it from breaking. Also, do not store it in the refrigerator door. It can easily fall out when you open the door.
