Our Cashy has been diabetic for over 5 years now. He is now 22 years old.
For the first few months we treated him with insulin without changing his diet from dry friskies. Next trial, we switched to MD Science diet. This dropped his blood sugar a little but we were still over the max of our instrument (a Relion Prime) at times. He was up to 12u of Vetsulin and was developing some hind quarters neuropathy.
At the advice of a helpful forum member, JanetNJ, we then switched him to Young Again Zero Mature dry cat food. We quickly had to get him off of vetsulin to keep him from becoming hypoglycemic. So for the next two years he didn't have any insulin With blood sugars in the 50-75 range.
All good things come to an end and we started to have to add some insulin again Still he was stable for about another year. This last couple of years he has started becoming what might be called a brittle diabetic. As you close in on good control it either goes down or up.
Down has sent him into severe hypoglycemia but we have brought him out of it by carefully monitoring his activity as well as with the glucometer. It is always in the day usually mid day. I think he doesn't feel good some days and his food intake varies. There have been times that he decides to not eat normally, Our fall back plan is Friskies Natural Pate. After a couple of months he sometimes won't eat that, So out comes the blender and we add water to it making a gruel. He won't eat day old. So the fall back from that is the higher calorie cheaper wet food. The things we do to keep these critters going.
Cash is actually in pretty good shape He enjoys going outside his weight is good and coat is not too bad. He is getting some brunescence in his lenses.
I have switched to .3ml syringes with 31g 3/8 needles. They are calibrated in u100 rather than u40, My spread sheet which has not been published has the amount as if it is u100. But that is fairly irrelevant. His max has been about 3 units and minimum of about 1 unit per day.
I am not complaining as I never expected him to still be alive. The oldest other cat was 18 years at time of death. Needless to say we don't stock up on supplies for him. JIT buying is most appropriate.
I think it may have been two summers ago, had a tall ladder extended to the second story. When I noticed he was near the top. Ran up stairs and rescued him from a second story window. Cats seem to go up better than down. That cat loves climbing.
