Hi everybody. Java and I were formally on the tight regimen and I was able to get him OTJ. due to his return to pred we are back on the juice and I cant seem to get him regulated. I have been wanting to post but was really afraid to be a failure. because of my work schedule he is shot at 12 hrs for the most part but sometimes 11-13. I am not doing a ss right now. he runs anywhere from 250-325 but there are times when he hits low 100's for no apparent reason. He is on 1.5u of Lantus. he stays with my mom for two days because of my work schedule and right now he is an hour past ideal shot time. he is under the bed and wont come out. How late would you think we can go and still shoot? I dont want him to jump to 500.

Thanks
steph

ETA: he came out from under the bed and he was 233 so she shot. he is eating like a champ.

I don't have any experience with pred, but have to say that you are NOT a failure. Good grief! I've seen it said several times that if the cat needs pred, then just work the insulin round it. I'll leave it for those with this type of experience to post the specifics.

Just make sure the next shot is 12 hours after the one last night.
I'm sure I've said this before in my mind, but maybe not out loud to you, Java is so pretty

Diabetes is a chronic condition, whether diet-controlled or not. In other words, its always present. Having to use insulin again merely means something changed, in this case, another medical condition. You just manage the diabetes around the other issues.

Is the pred being given daily? If not, that may show up in the glucose levels as the steroid level rises and falls. Setting up the spreadsheet and marking when the pred is given in addition to the insulin and glucose levels may help you see if there is a relationship. Also, we can look up the pharmacology of whichever pred it is and see how long each dose lasts in the body; this may help you plan better. For example, many cats go low at night and pred raises the glucose, therefore it may be best to give it at night ... if it raises it within the first few hours.

My schedule is eratic at times so I understand what you are dealing with. While a 12/12 schedule would be ideal, life happens. As long as it has been at least 10 hours since the last shot and you test before give the shot, you should be fine. Of course if the BG is too low to shoot either wait until later to test and shoot, or skip the shot until the next time one is due.
