Hi, everyone -- My sugarkitty, Fred, is currently eating the FancyFeast Classics and likes them just fine. However, I've noticed a few posts mentioning Wal-Mart Special Kitty. Would like to give it a try if I can get it online (most flavors aren't available @ Walmart online right now :-|). Anyway, I'm wondering how you think it compares w/ FF. Feedback would be much appreciated.

Best to all and purrs from Fred!

well, to be honest, it is probably on the low end of the food chain as far as good products in it. but that being said................ there are a lot of us that feed it without problems. with 8 cats, I cannot afford to buy the higher end foods and mine have done well on it for many, many years. some still eat it while the others have been on homemade raw. It is all in what you can afford. so I would go for it. I feed super supper, mixed grill and turkey and giblets. they rarely get any of the fish. just once in a while as a treat

I switched my two to Special Kitty a couple of months ago because it is cheaper. They definitely don't like it as much as FF. But they usually eat it even if they seem pretty unenthusiastic about it. So now, I sometimes mix in some FF for them as well and that seems to make them happy.

thanks so much! I've tried many kinds of food for Fred, both pricey (PetGuard, Science Diet, Wellness & a few others) and not-so-pricey (Friskies Special Diet, Whiskas, Trader Joe's). He doesn't like ANYTHING as well as FF. Makes me wonder what they put in that stuff -- some kind of kitty crack?

I may try the Walmart brand if it becomes available online again & will post re: results.

Best to all & all your fur friends!

A LOT of cats love Fancy Feast--that's one of the reasons why it's so popular here. It's easy to find, reasonably priced, and cats seem to go crazy for it. I switched to a higher end food (Merricks) for Bandit a while back but I still keep some Fancy Feast around for a treat once or twice a week.

One important thing to remember is that Fancy Feast is a mid-grade food--most of the flavors have a muscle meat as the first ingredient. Special Kitty is on the low-end--the first ingredient is byproducts. That's not necessarily a bad thing for canned food, and it's still a thousand times better than any dry food, but in terms of quality the Fancy Feast is better.

If price is the issue, maybe you can try grocery/pet store version of Fancy Feast? Sophistacat makes some comparable flavors (with a muscle meat as the main ingredient), and most grocery stores do something similar. Just check out the ingredients--things that have a meat as the first ingredient are better quality than things that have byproducts/liver listed as the first ingredient.

In the end, though, you gotta go with what your cat eats!

I fed it to Scooter for a while and he liked it enough. I just got kind of tired of the smell/look of it after a while, and I think he did too. It's a lower end food for sure, byproducts and whatnot, but it is also cheap, low carb, and there are lots of different varieties. I fed Scooter the Chicken and Tuna, Chicken, and Turkey and Giblets.

I find for foods around the same price, Scooter likes Friskies flavors more. So what I do is buy a few cans of that and a few cans of an expensive food like Wellness and mix it. Easier on the wallet ;-) I can't stand that Fancy Feast only comes in 3oz cans... It drives the price way way up... 4 tins of FF (12oz) is the same as 1 big can of Wellness (13.3oz).

we feed mocha special kitty turkey and giblets only ... She still comes running every single time she hears a can pop open :-D We were using FF but with that, and the cost of syringes, and test strips and litter, some weeks we couldn't afford food for ourselves nailbite_smile I'm thankful she still likes it as it fits into our budget nicely .. A few weeks back our wal mart was running low on turkey and giblets .. we were told they were not going to be continued any longer .. but sure enough, three days later the shelves were stocked .. We now have a 7 week stock pile going!
