Squallie vomited sometime in the middle of the night. Still nothing in the LB, for at least the second, maybe third day. he acts like he's fine but obviously something's going on with his tummy. Should I feed him and give him his insulin, or wait till he can see the vet? I his case, it will probably involve going to a new vet who doesn't know his history yet (or I can take him back to his old vet). His AMPS is 321. He did not get a shot last night, PMPS was 141.

Well, I went ahead and fed him, don't know if that was the right thing to do since I haven't seen him poop in at least two days and he vomited early this AM. But he ate well, seemed very hungry(he is usually hungriest in the AM) and finally had a pee (HOORAY). Guess I'll give him his insulin as usual?

Hello, Lucy. Is there any possibility that Squallie is constipated? If he is constipated (sometimes it can be caused by hairballs or lack of fibre in his food), try giving him some pumpkin puree (1 tsp per meal) which can really help.

About the injection, I really have no idea about this. I hope someone is dropping by and give you some advice.

I know this is a potentially stupid question, but it's one I'd ask for a non-diabetic cat... There's no way he got into and ate something weird (i.e., string)? Just trying to rule out impaction. Although constipation might look similar to that too, I guess.

Thank you! I wondered about constipation, too. He went to the vet yesterday for diarrhea, but I know that can be a component of constipation, as well.

I don't mean to sound stupid, but I don'like or use pumpkin so I don't know what pumpkin puree is. Is it like the canned pumpkin you can buy in the supermarket?

Not a stupid question at all! Squallie typically doesn't get into weird things, or eat anything that is not food, so I would think that's unlikely. But right now I'm not ruling anything out.

Lucy, can't tell above exactly where your question starts... if it is "I don't mean to sound stupid, but I don'like or use pumpkin so I don't know what pumpkin puree is. Is it like the canned pumpkin you can buy in the supermarket?" In case Hollis has signed off, the answer is yes. I have used it before and sometimes he eats it and sometimes he won't.
If you want to try it, please make sure it's pure 100% pumpkin in the can, not pumpkin pie filling (shouldn't have cinnamon, sugar, etc.). Libby's makes one and Whole Foods carries an organic: http://www.amazon.com/Farmers-Marke...Ounce/dp/B000HDI5O8?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20

Sorry for the ambiguity there! Yes, that was exactly my question, thanks!

There is no commercial pumpkin puree here from my place, so I cannot tell you exactly what it is. But, from others' messages, I think it sells in cans or in baby food jars.

If you cannot buy any pumpkin puree, you can make it by yourself. You cut the pumpkin into pieces, and steam them for about 15 minutes. Use a fork to mash them into puree.

Some will put the remaining into ice tray and freeze them into cubes. This is more convenient than making it every day.

Thank you, I may try to make some at home!

Update: I called his current vet and they told me to take him off the Sucraflate, which makes sense, but they don't seem particularly bothered by the fact that, aside from the diarrhea from a couple of days ago, he has not had any bowel movement at all.

Squallie is VERY hungry this morning, all my cats are. They have all eaten their full breakfast and now have had a "snack" of the same size, except for Squall, who had a little extra because he needs to take his antibiotic with food. Each time, he has eaten with great gusto, so his appetite is in tip-top form. Hoping he doesn't throw it all up. I would REALLY like to see it end up in the LB as a proper poo.

Just had a look on Wikipedia. Constipation is a common side effect for Sucraflate. Constipation can also cause vomiting. www.felineconstipation.org is a very helpful site.

You. Really. Need. A. New. Vet.

You are so right!!! Calling around today to find one :):):)

On Tuesday I wondered if he might not be constipated, in spite of the diarrhea. When he had his last bout of it, he looked to me like he was straining, and I know diarrhea can also go hand-in-hand with constipation.

:smuggrin:Beat ya to it, lol, already been there early this morning, as directed by @BJM!

Thanks for checking Wiki for me, I never thought of that. I figured it might cause constipation, though, if it's used to stop diarrhea. I wasn't sure about giving it to him when she prescribed it in the first place, especially after I told her he looked like he was straining.

You can give Miralax for constipation. But if it's been more than 3 days without pooping, I'd probably take him to a new vet. I don't feel like the previous vet really examined him properly, she didn't even take his temperature! And she gave him an antibiotic without identifying if he had an infection. I know it's more $$ but I would take him to a new vet. Something obviously isn't quite right. :(

I agree 100%. I'm calling around now, trying to find a new vet! :)
