Tigger isn't feeling well. He was acting different yesterday..didn't want to eat (highly unlike him!) and wanted to be left alone..but then became himself again, went outside, was his usual self. Today he seemed just fine until tonight when we tested him at 8pm...he was high enough to shoot (around 300), but he wouldn't eat, so we thought we'd wait and test later. At 11pm, still around 300, won't eat. Then we noticed a very smelly cat box and he had vomited. There was a long blade of grass that he threw up, plus his dinner that he had eaten at 5:30. He crawled under a chair, then under a desk. VERY unusual for him! I pulled him out, and he didn't like it. So we skipped his insulin tonight...was that the right thing to do?? Wouldn't it have made things worse? He's gone to sleep, and I hope and pray that he's better in the morning. What if he still won't eat but tests high? Of course we'll take him to the vet if this continues. We were leaving on a vacation in a couple of days, and he goes with us.

Owie..dunno if a vacation would be wise for him. Cats hate having their routine upset, and if he is sick, it might complicate matters. I can't tell from his pic..is he longhaired? He might have a hairball. But he might also be starting to have trouble with his pancreas. First of all, did you try a hairball remedy if he is prone to hairballs? And he might also just be upset about the whole diabetes routine.

Hm..smelly cat box. That could be a virus..what color are the stools? Can you break open one to look? Is it a typical 'sick' smell?..or something new?

Test for ketones. If you haven't got any strips get some straight away. If trace, speak to your vet. If more than trace take Tigger to a vet immediately to get them flushed out and to prevent DKA. Check for any signs of infection also. Look at link below to see if he has any nausea symptoms.

Nausea Symptoms

Sorry I can't write more at the moment. Hopefully other members will be along shortly to help you with advice on what to do about insulin.

Hope Tigger eats soon. Try to get some fluids into him. Might just be a GI upset but if you do go to vets ask them to check Tigger for pancreatitis and ketones.

This morning he's the same. No appetite, just drank some water and walked away from his food. This is not him!! He just tested at 295. DO WE STILL GIVE HIM HIS INSULIN EVEN IF HE HASNT EATEN??. Is it ok to give on an empty stomach???

Ok he has to eat. Try adding something really stinky to his food, like a heavy dusting of parmesan cheese. He may have for some reason lost his sense of smell. Mix the cheese in his food, hold him by his scruff and smear the food on his lips and let him lick it off.

Have you tried pureeing his food and allowing him to eat off your finger or a spoon? You will have to help him with pureed food at first because it doesn't look like food to him. Do you have a feeding syringe? If he still refuses you may need to feed him by syringe or spoon. No, no insulin until you can get him to eat...I'll look to others on the board to make that more clear..gotta dart out of the house for a bit. Spoon feeding isn't hard..but you have to coax him. Get some on his mouth so he can taste it. Once his tongue is in gear, the rest of the mouth will just follow.

It's ketoacidosis, and they're keeping him overnight for IV, etc. The vet thinks we got him there early enough and seemed positive, but she did warn use that it's a very severe thing. I feel very guilty and confused. His numbers seem to have been coming down and even his morning numbers were low enough not to give insulin some days. He always got it in the evenings. But I had not gotten the little alert on the monitor to check for ketones in quite a while as his numbers weren't that high.?? So I'm a little confused about this. He seemed totally fine until yesterday afternoon when he stopped eating and threw up. She was encouraged that he was still purring this morning and there's a chance we might be able to bring them home tomorrow if all goes well overnight. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Praying for you and your boy Tigger. Sending positive thoughts for a speedy home coming and recovery. You have nothing to feel guilty about,
you caught it early, as soon as you saw signs of something not being right.

:bighug:It doesn't take long for these little kits to go downhill. Don't beat yourself up. :cat: You're a great catMom! One thing that can help..if he's in ketoacidosis, sometimes his breath will smell very strong-sweet, like apples. I make a habit of checking both our kitties' breath each day, even before the diabetes showed up. (And while Dottie's teeth were still in her head I could smell her breath from three feet away!
