Hi everyone,

Relatively newbie here.

Flame Diagnosed 6/7/14. Started on 1unit of Lantus. Staying around the 300's in BG, so very slowly increasing Lantus. Has been at 2 units for a couple of days.
Tested before shot this morning and was 341 so went ahead with 2u. At some point (between 1 to 2 hours) after eating his Purina DM he vomited 3 times. I was at work, so don't know exactly when that happened. I came home at lunch and tested. We are at +5 after his shot and he is now at BG 131. Now, I realize that number is good, but I have to go back to work and am worried about it continuing to go down. I gave him approx 1 teaspoon of Trader Joe's cat tuna, and 1/2 teaspoon of fancy feast. Is that enough to keep him okay until I get home after work in 5 hours?

Thank you.... I realize I am a little squirrelly right now

Julie

update... 33 minutes later BG 110 gave another teaspoon of Fancy Feast.... Pretty afraid to go back to work....

These are lovely numbers, but scary the first time you see them. I'd leave out some regular food (cats eat when they feel themselves going low). Do you have a neighbor who'd come over in an hour or so and see that he is acting fine?

Unfortunately, I do not have anyone to come to check him. And yes... Lovely numbers, but so fearful that he will plummet over the next few hours. I put some of his beloved dry out. He snarfed it. But worried that he will vomit since he has not had it in so long.... Good grief!
Thank you. Any other thoughts before I go back to work? Other than don't go... which I am considering..

Next time, just give him regular wet low carb. We generally feed lower numbers with regular food. If they drop in the 40s, then the gravy off higher carb (need to have in your hypo kit) and finally honey mixed with gravy if they drop below 40. Dry encourages them to be stubborn about eating wet again and tends to take longer to impact the numbers and then, keep them higher longer.

It won't hurt him - just info for next time. I'd leave out some regular wet. Maybe take another test before you leave to set your mind at ease.

He is now at BG 108. I just gave him a teaspoon more of LC wet.
At least he has not vomited any more. That's a good thing.
I am going to hang out for another 1/2 hour and check him again.
Thank you very much for being with me during this... I really appreciate your support.

You're very welcome. It's the way this site works - people who were helped then help others. Someday soon you'll be posting on a new thread and telling them that it isn't as intimidating as it seems at first and that you survived it!

He seems to be on a nice gentle curve and not dropping down much. I'd think he would be fine. Usually they start rising around +7 or so, so he may not drop any more.

I didn't think I was the panic kind. I guess I was wrong.

I do absolutely love the numbers... just not mixed with the vomiting this morning and the wonder of his bg decline.
If the next number is similar, I will give him a little more LC wet and head back to work. And then sit at my desk and keep worrying until I can get home again LOL

When I get to that 'confident, non panic' place, I promise to be here for others. This site is a HUGE help.

Thanks again!

Julie :-)

I spoke with my Vet and she seemed to think he would be okay with me going back to work. She told me to leave food out for him. I will recheck him as soon as possible. Should be within the next 30 minutes. She also said to skip tonight's Lantus. I will post numbers as soon as I get them.

How is he tonight?

This wont help you now, but here is a suggestion, especially if you are a neurotic cat mom like me. Do you internet access at work or a smart phone you can check while at work?

If so consider purchasing a webcam or security cam and set it up in your house. That way you can check on him while you are at work. You will at least be able to see if he is acting weird, vomiting, etc.

I don't know if anyone else here does this, I bought one (a foscam) and have it set up here and check on the girls when I am going to be away for a while, gives me peace of mind. You can set it up with audio and hear them too. Some you can rig up and speak to them also. You can get an app and watch video of them in real time. They are fairly inexpensive.

Yep, he came back up to 329. He is enjoying his dinner without a care in the world. Meanwhile, I think I went through a few of my years all in one day today.
Thanks again for the support.
Julie

The Webcam is a great idea. I have used Ustream in the past, but didn't think about it for this. Thank you! What a great idea!
