Hello , and welcome to the weekend.

I just started my cat Sassy on Zobaline vitamins, and was wondering if anyone else out there uses them. I am getting her to eat them in her food and only give her 1- 3mg tablet a day.
I want to know if that is enough, and if anyone else is using it what differences you have seen in your cat.
I haven't noticed anything significant yet, but not sure if I know what I am looking for.

Any advice would help.
Thanks
Melissa

I have used the zobaline, but I switched to the vitacost version because of the cost, I started out giving it to them every day, but then toned it down because I felt like I was overdoing it... now I only really give it to them every few days and/or when I have extra time. I mixed it in a tiny bit of water first before mixing to the food to make sure it would mix consistently. As for dose, I'd guess that probably would be affected by the effect you're aiming for? Does your kitty have diabetic neuropathy? (weakness etc in the hind legs, sometimes walking on the hocks when it is more advanced) I believe the recommended dose is 3-5 mg, so you could give more if you feel it's needed

Neuropathy was my reason for starting it, Frog was very weak in his back legs and had lost a great deal of muscle mass. I don't think I really 'saw' the difference happen so much as ... one day I realized he had jumped into my lap, which he hadn't done in a very long time... his sister, not diabetic, also had not been doing any jumping (foolish me, I attributed it to age) ... They both now run and jump fairly frequently. (this has just been over the course of about five months, but the main changes were within the first 3) I also would say, that probably the food change from dry to wet is partially responsible as well (and of course the life-giving insulin for Frog)

I also now use the vitamin b occasionally to alter the flavor of foods they don't 'love' ... it works often, I mix it with a bit of water and add it like gravy

Thanks Barb,

Every bit of feedback is helpful. I haven't been able to afford getting Sassy back to the vet, she is 13 now and her health has just started a decline in the past year. She does have weak back legs and has started to pull herself up and jump very little unless absolutely necessary. The vet had mentioned they thought it might be her thyroid, I am hoping now after reading your comments that she doesn't have thyroid issues and it all plays a part in her diabetes.
I guess time will tell, as soon as I can afford to take her in and have her tested further then I will know for sure.

Thanks again and have a great weekend !!

Hows her BG levels? It helps if Sassy is regulated. and it takes 4-6 weeks for the zobaline to show any difference even with that.

Wendy,
I haven't been able to test her for the past week or so, I ran out of test strips and have more coming but when I get them I will let you know where she is.
It is good to know that the vitamins will show improvement in her levels as well.

I will keep a close eye on that when the strips come in and I can start testing her again.

Thanks
Melissa

I think Wendy was trying to say that the improvements that Zobaline can make will be more obvious once the sugar is more under control (uncontrolled sugar is partly the cause of neuropathy, so getting it in check allows healing to begin)

I don't believe the vitamin directly affects the bg levels (well, the zobaline anyway, the vitacost version (that I use) has a tiny bit of rice flour so if kitty was sensitive to carbs it could make them go up, but not really down)

Barb is correct - i meant that zobaline works better when the cat is regulated. It doesn't directly impact BG levels.

Once you get strips maybe you can share some readings with us and we can see how she is doing.

Wendy

Wendy,

Sounds good, I would be happy to share, this is all new to me, and want to make sure I am doing what I can to keep Sassy healthy and happy.

Another view pint on her readings would be great.

Thanks again to everyone, every little bit helps.

I was just wondering when do we stop giving Zorbaline? Gizmo is back to walking normally and we have managed to control his sugar by diet (no more insulin! ). Rgds Vee.

Hello Vee,

Wow, congrats on getting Gizmo into remission! Great job!

Regarding the Zobaline, if Gizmo's legs seem OK now you don't have to keep giving it. (I carried on giving it to Bertie for a little while after his legs recovered, just as 'insurance' in case there was any residual nerve damage that might be causing him any discomfort, but that was only for a short while). Cats do have an amazing ability to heal, don't they? :-D

That is why I only give it every few days now, I don't believe they need it 'every' day, but considering that my diabetic was not the only one that showed significant improvement with the addition of it, I don't feel comfortable just stopping, they clearly do need 'some'

Super gratz on getting otj, that's awesome!
