Good news.
#1. I talked to my vet this morning, he says he is open to using a different insulin if that's what I want. YAY! (currently we are using Vetsulin which I've read and hear is not always the best choice for cats) I specifically asked about Lantus/Insulin Glargine as another member, actually a few, recommended that to me, as well as many other sources, and I hear it has an extremely high remission rate and has done very well in clinical trials, etc. But then I came across this: http://www.bcpvetpharm.com/products_bovine.htm and then I did some looking into that today, and some people think PZI is better. Of course every cat is different but I'm still wondering what to try next...I don't want to go through a hundred different types of insulin so I'm hoping the next one is the right choice *fingers crossed*
Also, price? Any one know how much either of those cost? If location matters, we live in New Hampshire. My Vet says Lantus can cost $90 or so, but then I also hear there are tons of coupons (and I have this RX savings card that supposedly works for Lantus and covers my whole family) but I've been reading different things about PZI cost (anywhere from $40-$100) so I'd like some clarity on this. The BCP PZI web site states "Most cats can be regulated with only one dose per day, as opposed to the twice-a-day routine many cats require when using synthetic human insulin. Once-a-day insulin injections obviously offer a considerable compliance benefit for pet owners. Veterinarians have reported that there seems to be a smoother regulation of blood glucose curve when using BCP PZI®. " BUT other members have told me once daily insulin is not good for cats, that they almost always need it twice daily. Is this still always true with PZI?
#2. I am interested in getting vitamin supplements for my cat. I was thinking about it just before he was diagnosed. He is 11. The other cat is 8 (non diabetic) and now that they're getting older, I figure a good vitamin supplement might be beneficial. Does any one know any good ones, for general health of senior cats? One that is OK to give to a diabetic cat? I was reading that this one was good, but I don't know if it's OK for a diabetic: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000F4W02M/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20 (my cats don't have joint problems but I read it helps with a host of other things too and is good for older cats in general) or does any one have any other recommendations?
#3. I am interested in oral/dental health things for the kitties. I have been using tooth paste and brush (chicken flavor) bi weekly, for the last month/month and a half, but my vet says he could use a little more teeth help than that, if possible. Before I shell out even more money for dental work, he said I could try things at home first. I was looking at this: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B009T6KT3Y/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20 the manufactururers claim it's safe for diabetic cats but I was wondering if that was definitely true. They say so, here, when another person asked...just wanna make sure I can trust that answer, heh. :http://www.petzlife.com/resources/diabetes.php
K, that's it so far.
And also, sorry for posting so much...I am learning more and more and hopefully getting the hang of this quickly (I learned how to do the BG spread sheet today, and I've never used excell and new computer things scare me LOL so that was a step!!!) so I'm hoping to absorb as much good info as possible and have my stuff in order by next week and not need to keep asking questions any more lol
thanks!

I have used both Lantus and PZI. Both are good insulins.

Lantus is a human insulin. There is a coupon for $25 per pen on the Lantus website and that will save some money. If you get a prescription for Lantus I recommend the pens over the vial. The initial cost of the pens without the coupon is about twice that of a vial. The biggest difference is that because the pens contain smaller amounts than a vial, you will be able to use almost every drop before it becomes ineffective. So one package of pens could be enough insulin for almost a year, depending on your dose. With the vial, most people can use it for 3-6 months and then it stops working. You end up throwing about 1/2 the vial away.

BCP PZI will let you try the first vial for free. Your vet will need to order it for you. I do not know what the current cost of their vials are. It has been several years since I used it but if I remember correctly, it usually remained effective for over 6 months. At the time I used it, the cost was a little less than Lantus, but not sure if that is still the case.

Some cats on very low doses may be OK with once a day injections; the majority need twice a day, sometimes for life.

Depot insulins are Lantus and Levemir. These are same dose, every 12 hours or darn close to it. The effects are cummulative so there usually is less of a swing between pre-shot glucose level and nadir/lowest point between shots gluocse level

Non-depot insulins are ProZinc, PZI, and Vetsulin/Caninsulin (developed for dogs which have a slower metabolism). These may be dosed with a sliding scale after you determine how the insulin affects the glucose level.

Having a dental done will remove plaque - tartar that has been on more than 3 days - and dental x-rays will identify any below gum problems. Spray on products and chews are not helpful, nor is dry food. Feeding lightly cooked gizzards may help remove some plaque, per Dr Pierson of Cat Info.

My thoughts

Lantus
- can last up to six months if you keep it in the fridge (not the door) and dont roll or shake it. Pens last even longer since you only "open" one at a time.
- I find you will get a bit more support on here if using Lantus
- follow a prescribed protocol like the Tight regulation for an 84% remission rate i.e. http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=1581

PZI
- is also generally dosed twice a day like Lantus.
-Is a bit more work for a newbie because like BJ said, you develop a sliding scale over time based on testing.

You can always switch after a while if you find one isnt working well.

PS Make sure with any vitamins etc that they dont have sugar or carbs in them.
