Hello everyone,

My cat, Carlos, was originally diagnosed on 8/22 by a vet who prescribed Vetsulin. After a month or so of difficulties with this vet we saw a new vet on 9/15 who prescribed ProZinc (Hurray). Unfortunately the new vet was extremely against me testing before giving insulin and has given me a few lectures on how that is a waste and unnecessary. After a little over a week she said I could test whenever I wanted but that she wanted me to shoot the recommended dose for anything over 30. She started him on 1 unit of ProZinc but raised it to 2 units yesterday. Last night was his first time on 2 units of ProZinc and this morning his number is 153. I feel extremely uncomfortable shooting with that low of a number because I have no idea what it will do to him but fully expect a lecture from this vet about me not following her instructions. I am hoping to get some advice, do I give him insulin or is 153 too low? She said she wanted his +6 number to be in the 200's or 100's. I feel like there is no way me giving him insulin at 153 is going to give those results and am really worried and confused on what I need to be doing.

Additional information, he was eating Fancy Feast Pate but the new vet insisted we switch to Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Glycobalance. We checked and he does not have keystones.

Thank you in advance for any advice!

-Danielle

WELCOME TO FDMB Danielle and Carlos!
We are dedicated to helping anyone who finds this forum looking for guidance or just someone to listen.
We are glad you found us! While I ate to question an educated professional I strongly disagree with this one. Maybe as him/her...would you shoot insulin into your child without knowing where his sugar levels were first? This can be very dangerous and I am aslking you politely to disregard this vets advice and TEST.
I also have to say that 153 is rather suspicious Did you happen to retest? Just to makes sure that wasnt a wonky number? Considering the history I would retest before I did anything.

Look at you! You already have a spreadsheet! good for you! This is your BEST defense for Carlos! good job!
The only thing I will ask of you now is to set up your signature. If you go to the top of the page where the dark blue banner is, all the way to the right there is your name! Click on it and a drop box will appear. Go to signature then do this:

  • Click on Signature. This is where you will put information that helps us give you feedback.
    • There is a limit of two lines which may include two links; you may separate pieces with commas, dashes, | etc. This is where you paste the link for your spreadsheet, once it is set up.
    • Add any other text, such as
    • Caregiver & kitty's name (optional)
    • DX: Date
    • Name of Insulin
    • Name of your meter
    • Diet: "LC wet" or "dry food" or "combo"
    • Dosing: TR or SLGS or Custom (if applicable)
    • DKA or other recent health issue (if applicable)
    • Acro, IAA, or Cushings (if applicable)
    • Spreadsheet link. Please put the signature link on the bottom line of your signature information, on its own, so it is easy to find.
    • Please do not put any information about your location in the signature for security reasons. If you wish to add your country location, please add it to your profile.
Be sure to click the 'Save Changes' button at the bottom. If you need help urgently it is important we know these things at a glance. We don’t want to waste valuable time finding out information.

One thing about ALL dry food. They come PACKED with CARBS the very thing that feeds diabetes. If you decide to chuck the dry (highly recommended)
DO SO SLOWLY at little less every day. (I removed Trouble dry food and his numbers dropped 100 points almost over night. That can be dangerous.)

Hi Danielle, I'm about to head to work so I'll have to be brief until I get back - considering you don't have any mid-cycle data AND the pre-shot was a lot lower than normal a reduced shot would have been wise, and I think you're fine for skipping this time.

I don't like jumping the dose in whole units but from that low pre-shot this might have been a more ideal dose for Carlos. Purely coincidence, I'm not giving your vet any credit.

I don't really think vets should be offering dosing advice, some of the advice they give are just massive blanket statements with no regard to how dangerous a position it puts a cat in. With no data shooting such a low pre-shot, 2 units might have been way too much.

Has anyone discussed with you getting mid-cycle readings to keep Carlos safe during the day?

Do you happen to use the syringes with half unit markings, it's much easier when you have to increase or decrease by 0.25 units, that's how increase or decrease by 0.25 units not whole units. Carlos adorable :cat:

I do have the syringes with the half unit marks but I am not sure how do decide the dose by myself. Both of the vets I have been to have been against me testing at home, I try to follow the advice I see on this group about doing curves and checking at the +6 mark but am very new to this and dont know what is needed and what is not. Should I be giving him 1.5 units to start instead of 2?
