Vet Experienced with FD...Yorktown, VA

Hello,

Newbie here again. Now that I know my vet is not experienced or unfamiliar with FD based on my recent posting about "boarderline FD", where/how do I find one that is? Obviously if I start asking questions about one's credentials, experience, etc. he/she may go in the defense and be insulted by me asking. What do I do?

I am really shocked about my current vet's lack of properly diagonosing/handling my situation. I have been taking my cats there for about 15 yrs, BUT...all of them have been healthy, key point here I guess. What bothers me the MOST, is that I never knew that cats shouldn't be fed dry cat food. Why is this important information not put out there for everyone's knowledge? Based on what I have read today, dry cat food slowly kills cats! OMG! I feel extremely bad that I have fed my cat this for 12 years, I have abused my cat, unknowingly. Wow!

As an article stated, Vets are not taught extensive nutrition in school, just like human doctors. Personally, I have always been an advocate of vitamins and herbs, and I know based on my personal experience with my DR's, most of them will not engage in too much discussion regarding that. What a shame for all of us and our pets.

I am now on a mission to tell everyone I know, NOT to feed your cat dry food. I will do my part in trying to save our cats from unnecessary health problems, and I will DEFINETELY promote this web site! You are the best and care! THANK YOU!

We all try to teach others about dry food...

I want so much to tell strangers when I see them buying it but they just look at you like you are crazy.

I guess I could have a t-shirt printed that says "don't feed cats dry food"
and walk around petsmart type stores.... and anyone who asks....
hand them a print out of catinfo.org . :lol:

Word of mouth is the best way to find a cooperative Vet. Maybe edit your title with the general area where you live or are willing to travel.

Thanks, I agree. I want to scream this info from the roof tops to all cat lovers...(and maybe I will), and maybe I will be put in a padded cell, ha!

From my experience and from reading on this board, most vets are not well educated in feline diabeties and certainly not in nutrition.
I also think a lot have a bias towards dogs - maybe they are just more familiar treating them and so try to apply the same rules to cats ???

Anyway, if you can find a vet that's willing to learn and to look at some of the guidelines and info on this site, that would be a good step in the right direction.

This brings up a list of vets near you.

Look for clinics/hospitals with specialty staff in internal medicine. They may be a bit more expensive due to specialization.

Its also helpful if they offer 24 hour emergency service, as diabetics can have medical crises.

Another option is to educate your vet with some contemporary materials such as the AAHA guidelines Print them out. Read them. And then share them with the vet clinic you use and indicate you found some recent veterinary articles on feline diabetes and thought they'd appreciate having them printed out.
 
Thanks for the advice. I believe I will print out some material and give to my vet. I don't know how well it will be received though, he is in his mid 60's. Maybe I will mail it to the office with no return address..ha! :)

You'll want to be diplomatic.

Of course he's learned about many species of animal and it would be difficult for anyone to keep up with everything for every species, if not down right impossible. So perhaps it has been a while since he had a chance to review the topic and you thought this would save him some time.
 
Very true indeed. I will mail out a package to the facility, certainly no harm in that.
