Vet care issue, fragile kitty

Omg so insanely frustrated with vets right now!! The specialist won't give advice unless they see his test results of bg test and curves but he is still not level as he has been in & out of hospital & vet office 4 times in 2 weeks.
Sprocket is doing better but he is still fragile. He is on numerous meds and is just starting to eat regularly. His numbers are starting to show a pattern but vet wants me to only shoot insulin amount she tells me but she won't tell me anything. Regular vet is giving me issues for doing home care of bg. What am I supposed to do? Do nothing and hope nothing goes wrong when they are not open??? Wtf??
People with diabetes have to do home care why do they think its differnt for cats with diabetes???
 
Sorry to hear about the struggle you have been dealing with :bighug:. I could understand why Vet's don't push people to do home testing in the beginning because of the initial overwhelmed feeling but I do not understand why they would have any issue with people who are adamant about doing home testing. Like ok, I won't push you to do it, but OH you are wanting to do it then let's work together! It is almost as if they want to control everything but they seem to forget, we are with our fur babies every day, not them. We have said the same about doctor's administering insulin to kids, would they tell the parents not to do BG home care? Nope.

Are there any other Vet's in your area? Seems a lot of people have gone to a couple Vet's in the journey to help our kitties.
 
I am sorry you have gone through this with Sprocket and your vet. I hate to say it, but you are not the only one. My vet did not advocate home testing except at shot time and told me not to worry about curves because they could do them from the vet clinic. I think one of the most important tools to put in your tool belt to help Sprocket is home testing. In the end, it took me awhile but I found this board and followed the advice I received. Then told my vet what I was doing, even though she was not totally happy with it. In the end, she told me she has never had a IBD/diabetic patient recover as well or as fast as Jones. She even loved the spreadsheet we use here and said she would like more clients to use it.

I am not sure how much digging around you have done but there is posting with the yellow sticky notes with lots of information. It may become overwhelming but there are people here than can help guide you through the initial stages. You can post questions directly into the Lantus forum.

DKA is not pleasant and there are members here with experience that can help with Sprocket when he gets home and ways to help prevent it from happening in the future.
 
Yong, thank you. This is my 4th vet with him. I chose because she was willing to help me plus they have long hours and take emergencies during their open hours. Now that i need her advice I am getting a cold shoulder.

Tracey, thanks. I need alot of help. He has been diabetic 2 years now and I already screwed up before which is how he ended up in hospital this time.
He is home now. Been home a week. Started to eat better past few days. His bg is even starting to show a pattern.
In past 2 weeks, per vet advice, he has changed doses of insulin 4 times.
I am trying my best with advice & education from DCIN and a fellow diabetic cat mom & friend whom have pm'd me every day trying to help me. I am still trying to understand all this & make sense of it.
Sprocket is in like 6 meds, sub q fluids, plus his insulin.
I am so frustrated.
I do get overwhelmed with this website. I am trying hard.
I got Sprocket on under 5 carbs of food. Still wet food & dry as its what he wants currently. I do have zero carb dry mixed with evo dry for him.

I know how you feel. You just want them to feel and be better. Deep breaths. And I am glad your kitty is home and feeling good.

I get that. I would suggest you post to the Lantus group, plenty of experienced people there when you have specific questions especially on dosing. That is a lot of dose changes in a short time.
I would start with the sticky notes on what protocol do you want to follow - SLGS or TR. That will be one of the first things asked. It is totally up to you as to what you want to follow.
And second step while you are deciding on protocol - get your spreadsheet up and running. We are very data driven here and it makes it easy for everyone to see where Sprocket has been and what he is doing. It makes for quicker answers when things are going south. I am trying to find where the sticky is for the spreadsheet....
 
Thanks Tracey. I will try to find the sticky section. I do have a spreadsheet that Chris Ronkoski helped me prepare. I had issues making it open. I am not too savvy anymore on computers. They have gone way over my head. My laptop is in snail mode so I am still trying to update it.

If you use a smart phone you can do the spreadsheet on there too if you download Google Sheets app.
