YAY!!! VanGogh has been OTJ for about 6 weeks now! I've been "locked out" of FDMB so I wasn't able to post it except on FB page! So, glad to FINALLY get back on! VG is doing most excellent. He's eating better since going OTJ & has gained about #1/2. Very exciting for us, since I found this beautiful 10 year old Maine Coon in June, near starved to death at #6.2! He's now around #9. He's a bit small for a Coonie, but I would like to see him at least #10. But for now, we are just so happy! Thank you to everyone who has offered advice & support. . .I will pay it forward with what I've learned to others!

A (belated) Yahoo!! party_cat I cheered you on facebook and I'm glad to be cheering your success here, as well. :-D

Thanks for all the congrats! VanGogh is just patting himself on the back! KPassa, thanx for doubles! I was frozen out here so long & it's good to be back! Love you all & all your babies. . .both Sugar & Sugar Free! <3 cat_pet_icon

 congratulations!!

Tips to stay OTJ

We say a cat is in remission if the cat can maintain BG levels for 14 days between 40-120 with most of that spent under 100. However, please keep in mind that once a diabetic always a diabetic.

1. Never feed dry - not even treats. If you change wet food types, be 100% sure the new food is also low carb and same low carb % as your current food. Some cats are very carb sensitive and an increase from 3-6% to 8-10% can spike the BG’s. Don’t feed if you aren’t sure!
2. Weigh every 2 weeks to 1 month to watch for weight changes. Too much of a weight gain can cause loss of remission.
3. Measure blood once a week, indefinitely. You want to catch a relapse quickly.
4. No steroids or oral meds with sugar - remind your vet whenever giving you any medication. Always double check.
5. Monitor food intake, peeing and drinking. If increasing, a sign of losing remission.
6. Regular vet checks for infection such as dental , ear or UTI. And get them treated quick!

If he does fall out of remission you need to be more aggressive and resolve issues/ back on insulin as soon as possible as the window for a second remission is tight if any.

Thanks Wendy & Tiggy. I'm not planning on making ANY changes to VanGogh's diet, etc as he's doing very well on FF Classics & yes, he is one of those very sensitive to carbs kitties! Even Friskies Pate will bring his number up a bit! He was near starved to death (Maine Coon at #6.2!!!) when I found him in June, so we're still trying to get just a little more weight on him. He's hovering between #8.4 - #9.2 now & that seems to be a good range for him. . .tho I would like to see him stay closer to at least #9! Check his level every Thursday a.m.! He's kinda weird in that he never showed symptoms of being diabetic. Course he was so sick/weakened when I found him, it was hard to really know anything. He's not a big drinker or pee~er! But he HAS turned into a HUGE lover now that he's healthy! I will take care of him & treasure him & love him for as long as we both shall live. . .Amen! I so appreciate all the support & advice I received from this page & others! Helps to know we're not alone! dancing_cat
