he went back up incredibly high, what do i do for high blood sugar when it's not time for insulin? he's going to get his dose soon, but i do not like this one bit.

There is nothing you can do if the BG goes up high and it is not time for the insulin dose. Don’t ever give an extra dose of insulin. Just make sure he has plenty to drink and food to eat.
He’s possibly coming off the bounce…cats often go up higher before they come off the bounce. So I would test a few times this cycle just to see if that is the case.

I know to not give an extra dose of insulin. that's just asking for tragic consequences due to multiple peaks. Does exercise help a cat with burning off excess glucose like it does for humans, I wasn't sure if he should have a play session or not. I tested for ketones and it was either negative or faint traces.

I had a panic attack, a pretty severe one.

Exercise may help but if he is still having a bounce, nothing will bring the BG down except time.
High BGs are hard to see but they won’t hurt a kitty like a very low BG might.
Good thinking to test for ketones. That is always a concern with unregulated cats.
Remember you are very early in the FD journey and a kitty’s BGs can be all over the place while they are getting used to insulin which is a hormone.

Ketones were detected in trace amounts. I'm going to follow vet advice and return his dose to 0.5U tonight, and test glucose as often as I can.

While a trace of ketones is not serious, it is a heads up for you to test for them frequently. You don’t want them to increase at all and hopefully will disappear.
As well as increasing the dose I would increase the amount of food you are feeding him and if he will allow it, add a teaspoon of warm water to all the snacks of food.
It is food and insulin which will keep the ketones at bay.

Good plan. I was going to try splitting another can so he could have 2.5-3 cans per day, instead of just 2. I was thinking of incorporating those half cans sometime around the +2 to +4 hour mark of his cycles, emphasis on the PM one as he tends to drop lower overnight. What are your thoughts about that plan?

We are also thinking of keeping a pitcher in his room so we can more easily refill his water as soon as he needs it- especially because sometimes he likes to smack his bowl to spill it and drink from the floor, lol.

That sounds like a good plan for both the food and the water.
Let us know what the next Ketostix test is please.:)

Of course! Might be a bit before I can catch him going to the litter box quite so opportunistically as this past one, but the moment I get a reading it'll for sure get recorded in my SS and reported on here.

I'm just so thankful I asked my partner to pick some ketostix up at the pharmacy and that he was able to find them. Thanks to the sticks, we were able to catch it early on so we can work on reversing it immediately.

He is alert and chatty when I went to check on him just now, and he finished the extra food! In a bit I'm going to see what his +6 reading is :)

No ketones detected as of PM+7!! Confirmed with two sticks.
That’s great no ketones!
In response to a Pm about testing, I will answer here.
As you got 126 at +6 and you are up to +7 now, I would get a test in now to see if it is still dropping.
……………I see you have just tested and you have 176 for +7 so I think you are safe to go to bed. So nadir was at +6. Great info.
Well done.

Thank you so much for your praise and assistance, I really needed that ;~;
I'll be sure to update his vet in the morning, tonight was certainly a night!!

Ketone strip at +6.5 between negative and trace? Maybe I didn't test the sample quickly enough last night with his negative results? Or its that I didn't give that extra half can with this cycle....
:(

Sometimes it is hard to decide if there is a trace or it’s negative. Are you reading it at exactly 15 seconds?
Just keep giving the extra food and fluids and testing daily for ketones.

This past reading was done by my partner so I cannot confirm. Was able to do a test just now and got a stopwatch up to make sure I was waiting long enough- trace again, as there was a subtle color change. He is due for his next injection, and was apparently really wanting dinner as he was camping out by the food bowl.
