My civvie paws has a uti & I can't get him to the vet until Monday :(

Since he won't eat I've been syringe feeding him baby food & I started syringe feeding him some pedialite to make sure he stays hydrated.

Can I give him some cipro to help with the infection until I can get him to the vet on Monday? I know it's a uti since he's got some blood in his urine. He's still peeing & he was drinking some water recently so he's not blocked.

I'm going to run out & get him some pure cranberry juice & if need be syringe feed that to him to help with the ph of his urine. I know it won't fix the infection but I was hoping it may help him feel a bit better in combination with some antibiotics & food.

Hi Jennifer,

As Lucy mentions cranberry may be too acidifying. D-mannose is the beneficial ingredient in cranberry juice. It is thought to be effective specifically against e. coli infection. Some info on d-mannose in this thread:

Could the UTI be stress-induced? If yes, maybe try Feliway diffusers (a combo of the classic diffuser and the new Feliway Friends diffuser seem to be quite reassuring) and perhaps keep Paws' environment as calm and secure as possible for the time being. There's also a product called Cystease that you might research (not used it myself).

Thanks for the info mogs! I was wondering if the infection is stress induced as well. I know things have been pretty stressful for everyone around here in the last month between loosing vegetable, beans being sick, DH being in & out of the hospital & now a new kitty in the house. Whatever the reason I'm trying to keep him happy & healthy so I will definitely get him on the D-mannose & look into the Cystease, I don't want him to ever go through this again

That's a lot going on for you all, Jennifer. I feel for you. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Make sure he's still producing a normal amount of pee all the time and get him to the vets as soon as possible, Jennifer. If his pee volume reduces or if he gets at all agitated or stressy or starts hopping in and out of the litter box, don't wait; treat it as an emergency and get him him to a vet straight away to make sure that there's no blockage. (Boys need extra protection from UTIs.)

I hope that Paws feels better very, very soon. Your DH, too.

Prayers for Paws, and for your DH! Hope everyone is better, soon!:bighug::bighug::bighug:

@donnalea is right, if you give any antibiotic now you will need to wait at least a week before before having a culture done.

That may have a small effect on getting an infection. However, stress can cause blood in the urine w/o an infection. My Patches used to periodically get blood in urine and it was due to stress, usually getting attacked by another cat in my house. A urinalysis and culture did not show any infection
