Hi!
Helping a neighbor who's undergoing surgery. The only male (2 are females) appears to possibly have a UTI. What's best to do? Know, vet. But what might be a good antibiotic, if needed? I don't want to upset my hospitalized neighbor by asking leading questions. And I don't really know the kitten's usual behavior. Might just be upset by being moved to my house. All hints welcome!
Best wishes,

Hi Larry, the two females seem just fine peeing & racing around like crazy chicks! Only the male appears not to pee and now hides under a rocking chair. I have 4 litter boxes set up. I've seen him go into all 4 but not pee, as far as I can tell. Actually, one clay litter box is fresh & not used as yet. I call it their sandbox. So far he's eating OK. I'm permitted to cuddle him, but if I leave and come back into the room he's under the rocking chair.

Could be that he is just scared of you.
When he goes into the box does he try to urinate? My concern is not that much with a UTI but with a urinary blockage. With a UTI you frequently see frequent and small urinations and the bladder is empty. With blockage you see frequent trips to the box and frequently not even in the box and they try to urinate and little if any comes out. The bladder fills up and does not empty. A blockage is very bad.

Is there any chance he might have peed somewhere other than the litter box? Is it at all possible to pop the little fella into the bathroom on his own with some food and water, a litter box, and maybe something waterproof with some soft old rags on that would show up some pee? Sometimes cats with UTIs become afraid to use the litter box but they may try to pee on something soft and absorbent. Such a set-up might help you monitor him better. Signs of distress - agitation, 'panicky' pacing, mewling - are things to watch for. If you're not sure, then I really would suggest a 'belt and braces' trip to the vet to get him checked over. Males are much more vulnerable to blockages.

Thank you! He's peed a bit in the litter box:) I shouldn't say "a bit" since I'm not familiar with his pattern. Yes, I could confine him in a bathroom, if it becomes necessary. Thanks for the hints. He ate some, pooped, played, and back under the rocking chair. I found 2 more boxes of Perfect Litter, that's the one that turns pink (through dark red- directions say to observe for a couple of days) when pee with UTI hits it. So far no pink! Will see. All three kitties are white. And soooooooooooo delicate looking! All three are now asleep on top of the chair. Thanks for all the suggestions. Appreciate your time!

There are also urine test strips you can use to test for UTI, if waiting around isn't effective soon enough. Just requires a fresh specimen.

Thank you, BJ! I have the UTI test strips (wasted one, one left :) The little sweet seems better as he comes up to me readily. Eats, poops, some urine. Just seems better! Need to see. He does not like to be away from his sisters but does OK confined to the bathroom, if I'm there with him and he's eating his favorites food liberally sprinkled with FortiFlora and bonito flakes! Smart! Loves treats.
Best wishes for you and Gracie,
Sophie

I'm glad to hear the little fella is getting over his shyness. :) And also relieved to hear that he's peeing.
