UTI & Ketones?

I am trying to understand ketones & UTI.
Today Baxter went to the vet for a possible UTI. Lab work will be back in the morning.

Here is why I ask....this morning when I found the urine with blood in it....I stuck a ketone strip in the small puddle. It changed to dark purple slowly, which means high. I don't really know if I tested it right. The little puddle was there for 2 hrs before I found it. The strip didn't change for a couple of hours.

Is it a given if there is blood in urine then there is ketones? confused_cat

Baxters #s have been higher then usual which I know can be related to infection.

Tonight's 8:00pm PMPS 292-1.0 PZI. Vet visit was @ 3pm.

With Ketone sticks they are time sensitive, you need to read the color they turn in exactly the 15 seconds that it says on the bottle. If it took it hours to turn dark purple it is a valid reading. Do you remember what color it turned almost immediately? That would be the color of the truer reading.

And the pee is supposed to be fresh- less than an hour if you can't test immediately. My bottle instructions said you would get an incorrect reading otherwise.

And read after 15 seconds because I think it just keeps going and going and going...

I am not disagreeing with anything that has been stated regarding the color change on the strip. But, I wanted to emphasis the importance of staying on top of the ketone testing, given your situation.

I will speak from experience.....My Kitty, had a bloody UTI last March. I started an oral antibiotic perscribed by the vet immediately. Kitty's BGs continued to rise daily. I was not testing for ketones, as Kitty was newly dx and I was not familiar with ketone testing. But, my vet did test for ketones on Saturday and they were negative. On Sunday, Kitty's eating had decreased dramatically and she was not "acting right." I took her to the Emergency Vet--- her ketones were in the moderate range (one day development) and she was dx DKA.

Obviously, this does not mean that your kitty will develop ketones or go into DKA, but when I read your post it sounded way too familiar. Like I said, I didn't post this to alarm you, but instead to share my experience with a bloody UTI, high BGs, and the importance of testing for ketones.

Please continue to test regularly for ketones.

Good Luck!

Good point.

While Sneakers had decreased appetite she didn't have any blood in her urine.

Now she eats 6oz/day and jumps up on things alot. Still checking for ketones...

Hiya Jenn

One thing that have helped me enormously to keep track of my Simba and his inside stuff going on or not has been this https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id ... =3&theater

Bayer Multistix 10 SG Reagent Strips for Urinanalysis (100 strips)

It is the same strips the vets use themselves, and you can buy them OTC or on the net stores in US. One of the things it measures in the urine is precisely ..... blood.

One strip measures the following

Glucose
A-ketones
pH
Bilirubin
Urobilinogen
Protein
Specific gravity
Blood
Leukocytes
Nitrite

Just wanted to let you know it is out there and a good tool to add to the cat health, and also a good tool (weapon) to have when going to the vet :-)

(This album shows parts of my Home Pharmacy, there's the meters, strips and so on, and also the plastic cups I use for the urine when Simba pees, either I manage to get a full large plastic glass or a full small plastic glass - sometimes I just lift up his behind a bit and fast as really fast stick in the strip in his urine stream https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id ... 846&type=3 )

Thank you so much Ann for the information. I am going to get those ordered.
He was tested for all that stuff which cost me $216.
If I would have had those strips...I could have walked into the vet office & said here...these are the #s. Probably would have blown there minds.

Just be away that:
The Specific gravity result is very inaccurate
The Leukocytes (white blood cells) reading is about 99+% false positive.

Yea, both Leukocytes and Nitrite has to be on board for the right positive.
