Tuxie had a UTI and just finished 10 days worth of zenequin 12.5 mg on Thursday. He was back to normal after the first day of AB. Now again this morning he is having trouble peeing..just a few drops and many many trips to the LB. He has done a few drops in various locations around the house as well.

His sneezing..he has occasional episodes of feline herpes..stated two days ago and I have been giving l-lysine. He is not stuffed up and is eating well but has major sneezing fits and then coughing after.

I am taking him to the vet in 1 hour and want to know what else can be checked with him. I have a small sample of urine but it probably won't be any good since he has just finished AB and is now on flagyl 20mg the last 2 days for dental issues. He had a dental a month ago but when I took him in for the UTI his vet said he is developing plague again already and wanted to do a short maintenance course of flagyl.

What else could be going on I could have tested???

The vet should take a sterile urine sample so the urine can be cultured to determine if there is A UTI and to find the best antibiotic.
The vet should also spin some of the urine and look for at the sediment under a microscope to help determine what is going on. Maybe crystals.
Maybe just sterile cystitis with no infections.
You also said " flagyl 20mg the last 2 days for dental issues". That si strange since Flagyl (generic metronidazole) is used for GI issues, not dental issues. ANTIROBE (clindamycin hydrochloride) is commonly used for dental infections.

Thanks for the reply...The last UTI 2 weeks ago they checked for crystals. Unfortunately their lab cannot do a culture and it would have to be sent away.

I don't know if a sterile sample would be of use because of the ABs he has been on and still is. I don't really know why she prescribed flagyl other than maybe she thought it might help with his organomegaly (pancreas, adrenal and liver enlargement).

Yes, a culture will not help since you would have to had stopped antibiotics 1-14 days prior to the culture.
If they find bacteria I would try a different type\class of antibiotic like maybe Clavamox.

You are probably at your appointment by this time but I am wondering the same as Larry why your vet would give Flagyl for dental problems when it is for diarrhea. Did your vet do a re-check when the first course of antibiotics were finished? The urine needs to be obtained via cysto not free catch. Also, I would in the future insist on FULL chemistry panels and FULL cbc panels, and you need urinalysis WITH culture. Labs need to be sent out to a major lab, and not done in house. Some vets don't want to add cost by sending out labs but if left untreated, infection can work up into the kidneys.

Well we are back from the vet...Tuxie had some blood in the urine (free catch) so the vet.....not my regular..but I have dealt with him before and I like him.....suggested a 14 day treatment of Zenequin 25mg this time. He says flagyl can be used for gingivitis but antirobe is preferable. He thought my regular vet was also trying to work on the organomegaly at the same time...which in hindsight makes no sense. Anyway the zenequin hopefully will take care of any urinary issues and if he is getting an upper respitory infection (sneezing and coughing..lungs are clear) it will help with that as well.

And of course all this happens on a day with a dose increase and Tuxie decides to have an active cycle. I was supposed to increase by .5 units but made a mistake this morning and only did .25 units. Even after the peeing discomfort and the vet stress and having given him medium carb before going he had a number at +8 of 94 on an AT2 meter. This guy sure likes to keep me hopping!!

I will have a full CBC and urine culture done once he has finished this round of antibiotics. It has only been a couple of months since I had these done but maybe something has changed since then.
