Using parmesan cheese on food

Our cat Zoe who is just over 2 years old, is a really picky eater. When we found out Doogle was diabetic in Sept 2011, I transitioned him to wet food while waiting on his blood work to come back over a weekend ( the vet sent his blood work off to Auburn Vet school). All the other cats (11 total at the time) didnt mind the new change, they welcomed it with open paws. But our cat Zoe would not eat it to save her life. So I tried transitioning her with the FF appetizers and she loved them Well I knew they were not good for her as a meal ( she would still get a bowl of dry at the time). Well now all the dry is gone (has been for months and I stopped feeding her the appetizers and found she will eat the FF fish and shrimp and something called Nature's Recipe chicken ( which as far as I can tell is LC). So last night I tried the Parmesan cheese trick and she ate some of the Friskies Mixed Grill for the first time. So I was wondering if you can use other cheese to entice picky eaters (like shredded mild cheddar or mozzarella)

Donna,

My Pumbaa loves all kinds of cheese. As a treat after testing, I'll give him tiny bits of cheddar or Swiss. But I love when he comes running when I shake the container of Parmesan. :)

Other things that people use to entice their cats to eat are Bonita Flakes and FortiFlora sprinkled on the canned food.

Both of my cats also love a crumbled nugget of Stella & Chewy's freeze dried raw food sprinkled on top.

Is there a certain brand of Bonito Flakes I should look for? I know I cant buy them in my area so I will have to buy them online.

Donna, I've never used the Bonita Flakes or the FortiFlora, but you might do a search for those words in Health as well as on the various Insulin boards 'cause I know people have talked about using them over and over again.

Yes - cheese is an animal source of protein and fat and is fine to feed as a flavor enhancer or as a snack.

Cheese is usually high in sodium but this should not be a problem if fed in moderation.

Awesome.........Thank you Dr. Pierson!! Anything to help get Zoe kitty to start eating something other than Fish and Shrimp

Petco and Petsmart and other pet stores sell bonito/tuna flakes. Cat-Man-Doo and Kitty Kaviar are two brands. I think Petco even has their own generic brand name of bonito flakes. If the local chain pet store doesn't have any in stock, you can always order them from the web site.

I don't see any listed on the Petsmart web site but I'm sure I have seen bonito flakes at the store. Other online pet stores will have bonito flakes, like PetFoodDirect.com

Non-chain independent pet store/specialty pet stores are other places to buy bonito flakes.

You can also try crushed up freeze dried meat treats or freeze dried raw food.
