Using a human lancet device instead of free handing it?

Hi all! I use a human glucometer and instead of using the lancet device, I've just been using the lancets themselves. I'm worried doing it this way is hurting him because i'm making the "prick" last longer than the device.

Does anyone here use a human lancet device? I am looking to use the one i have but I'm worried i will go through my boy's ear...

You can set the device to different "levels" (for lack of a better word) but I had a heck of a time with the device I threw it in the trash and just held the lancet in my hand. Many people DO use the device (as far as I know they are all human) I just wasnt one of them.

For him I set it to the deepest level (5), but his ears are scarred and fat.
I have two others (OWell and another generic one) but this one has the softest click and least recoil out of them.
I haven't tried by hand.

I used a needle freehand as my vet showed me he liked to do it. Never had any issues.
