Hello!

Thank you for allowing us to join this group. Urru is a calm and kind 15 years old tabby (she was a stray so her age is an estimate), 6.46kg (14.24lb). We live in lovely Montreal, Quebec. She's been diabetic for more than 9 years, on Caninsulin. At the moment, she takes 4 units, 12 hours apart. Food wise, she eats no grain food, mainly canned. She is a little bit chubby, we managed to loose 1 pound by replacing some of her canned food with OM canned food by Purina. Her main food intake is from Wellness no grain Turkey and YoungAgain Zero Mature. We do home testing with an Alpha Trak 2. The reason why I say 'we' is because I would like to acknowledge Urru's incredible patience and collaboration during this 9 year path. We just had a full blood panel, all seems fine for her age. I am about to try Lantus, some guidance would be much appreciated. My vet is not used to Glargine. The reason why I would like to try Lantus is that with Caninsulin 4u, the lowest glucose level that we reach is around 12 mmol/L (250-260mg/dL) which is high. Instead of increasing Caninsulin, I would like to try Lantus, so that she can have a more flat curve and feel better (more active). Ketone wise, I will get the urine strips today but I am not used checking this. Any advice would be appreciated. Here below, some curves done in February 2020. At that time, Urru was taking a higher dosage of Maxitrol (eye) and Flovent (asthma) which triggered her glucose level. I know that I have to get a recent curve but would like to hear from you first. Thank you very much.

Hello and welcome from BC. My girl started on Caninsulin, but it only lasted a couple months. It didn't last for long in her system, she was high a good part of the day. We switched to Lantus after that. Then eventually Levemir because my girl needed higher doses - that's a longer story that you need now. Lantus is a much better insulin for cats. The insulin doses may or may not end up being similar to Caninsulin. My complicated girl ended up on higher doses of Lantus - but much better blood sugar numbers which was better for her.

Do you have any blood sugar numbers other than the curves listed above? We strongly recommend getting blood sugar values before you shoot, to make sure it is safe to do so. It also helps a bit with figuring out who the cat is doing on a particular dose.

We have a common spreadsheet format here that most of us use. Here is a link to Spreadsheet Instructions. Without seeing more data or a spreadsheet, I cannot help you on insulin dose.

Bonjour et bienvenue from Ontario! :) Urru sounds like such a sweet girl.
I’m far too new to offer any advice. Still figuring out Lantus with my kitty, after switching from Caninsulin, but just wanted to say hello. You have found a great place to get help, once your spreadsheet is set up. There are a lot of amazing, knowledgeable people here.

Hi Wendy, thank you for your note. Just wanted to make sure: I should provide blood sugar numbers while Urru is on Caninsulin or once I start Lantus? The vet prescribed 3 units. Thank you!
