Urinating

Okay, so the vet wants to know if he is urinating like normal. We have a video camera set up in the bathroom to monitor the litter, and it looks like he is visiting the litter box 1-2 times a day. But, the camera isn't clear enough to actually tell if he is urinating. And then today he was licking his genital area.
Suggestions on how to make sure he isn't blocked or having any problems? I mean, I could try to perhaps get the camera closer? But I'm still unsure I will be able to tell.
He isn't whining, except his normal cries when he sits at the back door or on the top stair looking out the front door.

Do you use a clumping litter? If so, many clumps are there, and are the clumps the big or the same size as his pre diabetic urine output? Once the blood sugars are under better control, their urine output comes back to pre-diabetic levels

I've never actually looked to see how big the clumps are. For a while though, I know it was HUGE because hubby and I were scooping twice as often. I'll ask hubby when he scoops it next.
The most recent time I was able to jump into the litter box and look at his pee-clump it was about the size of a nickel, I think.

Oh, and we use SoSwheat litter - its made out of wheat instead of the normal stuff, dont know if that makes a difference.

The most important is to compare urine volume now vs pre diabetes. I know when Murphy was first diagonosed, his clumps filled an entire plastic newspaper bag every day, now it is back down to 2-4 smaller clumps

If he goes 1-2 a day, I wouldn't think it isn't normal. Baco (is now OTJ) and goes 1 or 2 a day. Mostly once a day. But pre diabetic diagnose she would go between 6 to 10 times a day.... And drinking a lot of water also!

Okay, i've posted the potty patterns for the past 3 days on my SS. Can you check it out?
Our scale finally came in! So we can get a measurement on him.
I'm still worrying about his peeing habits. I guess that's part of adjusting to this new lifestyle?

I read those links a few days ago and they are great ideas. The fluid input/urine output is kinda hard though because we have two cats. What I've been doing is this --> We have an old security camera that turns on and records movement when it sees it. So we have it sitting on the bathroom counter in the cats' bathroom and recording when he goes in and if I can see anything. I just wish it was more accurate. :) I like the 5 P's though! Made me stop and think.

Jess, the camera will tell you how often the cats go to the LB, but the amount they pee is also important - for that, you have to look at the size of the clumps.

I had hubby reposition the camera last night, so I wonder if we caught any visits to the box. I think the amount of light in there might not be enough to detect how much they are peeing.....
*Oh my life!*

Can you separate the cats for a day? That way you'd know exactly how much each one was producing.

I hadn't considered that! Thanks for the idea! If it was for only one or two days, I think my kitties could handle it. My healthier younger girl, Nala, is very timid so she might be like "What the hecks going on!?!?"... but she'll eventually come out of hiding ;-)
