My civvie Thompson has a flare of his kitty herpes virus I think.

This morning he didn't seem to eat very much and then puked water a couple times. I wasn't concerned by him not wanting to eat first thing. He often does this holding out for something better! :rolleyes:I am trying to get him off kibble so didn't give him any this morning in order to entice him to eat canned. I went out for a bit and came home to some more vomited water. So I gave him some kibble, which he ate a small amount. He then puked that.

I was then getting concerned. So I busted out a bag of kibble in a different flavour. He ate a couple small handfuls. I also cracked a tin of Friskies with gravy. He ate a small amount of that as well. He kept that down, so I offered him a bit more and he ate that too.

This evening I watched him drink water and he almost gagged after. The light bulb then goes off that he seemed to gag after drinking water the other day. Almost like a hair ball but nothing came up. I also clue in that he has been sneezing the last couple of days and his eyes a bit more watery :banghead: So I am thinking this is a flare of his herpesvirus

I was prepared to take him to the vet but he seems to be keeping his food down and eating small amounts when offered. Thompson has had kitty herpes since we adopted him. They all get flares off and on, but I haven't noticed him like this before. His breathing does seem louder, probably from nasal congestion. He isn't coughing or wheezing audibly.

He does seem more lethargic but purrs and snuggles. Just not being the kangaroo he usually is. I am wondering about a secondary infection but there is no coughing and no green drainage.

I am try to avoid a trip if at all possible to the vet but of course will take him if he gets worse. I have just spent $2500 on Glen in 30 days  and I can't afford another vet visit! Thoughts?

Here is a thread about the use of L-lysine which says basically everything I was going to write: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/threads/lysine-what-is-it-used-for-and-dose.155586/

It seemed to help for some cats. However, a recent study says that it doesn't. I found that it helped Rover. Flares were less frequent and much shorter. If you go this route, use the human powdered lysine gelcaps and try sprinkling it on food. The lysine gel paste that you get from the vet has sugar in it.

We've chatted briefly before. I know you're a nurse so you would know better than me if this translates to a cat and I know nothing of kitty herpes. Good thing we're anonymous here. I get "flareups" the size of a Loonie, lips, ears but not genital. Can't leave the house. I take Valtrex / Valacyclovir, a course of 4 X 500mg twice a day for two days and if I catch it in time it's a huge help. Just trying to be of some help. It's only because of a Trust Fund that we're not living under a bridge so I feel your pain about vet bills. Wishing you luck.

So I took him in this morning. He vomited up whatever kibble was left out for him probably about five different times last night. I did give him some wet food that he kept down but just felt better taking him to be checked. They didn't see anything obvious. Said could be some kind of GI upset. He didn't seem to have tenderness anywhere. So he got a shot of anti nausea stuff and gave him some sc fluids at home. He lost his mind with that so only got about 50mls in. Will try again later.
