Can anyone guide me or give any advice? I'm lost and very very worried. My sugarbaby Missy, who was diagnosed about a month ago, she has been receiving insulin shots at 1 unit a day, along with a wet canned food diet. Tonight around 1am she has projectile vomited, which she has never ever done. I can't check her sugars because her freestyle libre has fallen off a few days ago, and do not have another glucose monitor as of right now to check. She seems ok otherwise, but I'm very very concerned. I phoned an emergency vet but can't afford the cost to take her in right now. Is this something I should panic over? I will be calling her regular Vet first thing in the morning, but need to know if there's anything I should do, or watch out for in the meantime.

Hi Brittany! Welcome to FDMB. :)

I saw your post on our FB page as well and am reproducing it here for @Bron and Sheba (GA) and @tiffmaxee to see as well:
"She only receives 1 unit of insulin once a day in the morning, the vet reduced it from twice because she was becoming lethargic. Before the sensor fell off her numbers would run anywhere between 300-400 throughout the day. She had her daily insulin shot at 7 am this morning, and just now vomited around 1 am."

Can you tell us what insulin she is on and what wet food she eats?

How does she look now? Was that a one time vomitting episode? Has she eaten since?

I would take her to the vet as soon as you can in the morning. Ask the vet to check for ketones in the urine. Take a urine sample in with you if you can collect one.
In the meantime I would try and see if she will eat small amounts of food. It is important she eats.
If you have a syringe that is big enough I would try and syringe some water in. But be careful to aim it into the cheek so you don’t choke your kitty. Just do small amounts of both at a time and wait to see if she can tolerate it. Don’t worry if the food is not low carb. Offer her whatever she will eat.

Insulin in cats needs to be given twice a day. Once a day only covers the cat for 12 hours. The other 12 hours the cat is back in high numbers.

Hopefully this is just a one off vomit.
but you need to sort out the insulin to be given twice a day and either get another libre or start home testing yourself. We can help you with that.

She's currently on Prozinc insulin and the Wet food she eats are fancy feast medley and friskies pate. She seems to be ok as of now and only the 1 time vomit but still keeping an eye on things. I will be contacting the Vet first thing in the morning to get her in.

Also agree that she needs more then once a day dose of the insulin so will be consulting the Vet about that as well, along with trying to get set up with home testing monitor and strips

Fancy Feast Medleys are too high in carbs. The low carb versions are Classics/Pates, Roasted and Flaked. Which Blue Wilderness food is she on?

In addition to a glucose meter, you also want to get ketone testing urine strips so you can test for ketones.

Btw, I have sent you a PM with the details I need to set up your Spreadsheet and Signature here on FDMB.

I would recommend a human meter. The pet meters are expensive to run. You can buy a ReliOn meter from Walmart for a very reasonable price.

If the Vet thought the insulin was too much he would be better halving the dose and give half am and half pm dose. But if the BG were around 3 to 400 it doesn’t sound as if the dose should be reduced.
If your kitty is lethargic at all make sure the vet checks for ketones. Then I would buy a bottle of Ketostix from Walmart or a pharmacy and check the urine each day for ketones.

Head to Walmart. You'll want to get

1. A glucose meter. Many here use Relion Prime because the strips are cheap.
2. Box of 100 extra test strips
3. Box of 100 26 or 28 gauge lancets
4. Cotton cosmetic rounds to go behind the ear and protect your fingers

I have a video in my signature showing how I tested my cat CC at home.
