Hi! I just typed a lengthy into. only to have my computer die before I submitted it! So, for now this will be briefer because I am in panic mode. My 13 year old male cat, Jupiter, has been off of his insulin for 1 1/2 days now. I have been using Lantus vials & am shocked by the price increase again, as many of you know! Although not perfectly controlled by any means, he has been doing decent lately (especially since I switched to FF wet food thanks to posts found here). I think I need to learn to do home blood tests in near future, but for now need to get him back on something. My vet, while a caring man, is not so knowledgeable when it comes to alternatives for treatment - as far as he knows, the Lantus vial is the only option. I have read on posts here about getting the Lantus pens, some finding places that will sell single ones. I am in the DALLAS, TX area and have called Target, Costco, Savon, CVS... Every place has stated definitively that they can only sell box of pens. I don't know if this is a Texas thing, that they won't even consider, or if it's just the locations I called - I saw Target & Costco as 2 of the places willing to sell single pens to some other members, so started there. Anyone have luck at anyplace in this area? Or any other ideas? Should I maybe try another type of insulin? Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks! By the way, info for others, the prices I was quoted for the Lantus vial ranged from $207 (Costco) to $240 (CVS).

Try using this to search for a less expensive place:

N human insulin (sometimes called NPH) is less expensive but does not work as well since it only last about 8 to 10 hours

I am in Texas and we got our single pen at a Sams Club. You do not have to be a member to use the pharmacy. It was some time ago as he is now diet controlled, but I checked recently for another member and the same location would still sell a single. BUT another Sam's location would not break the box. SO yes, you have to call around as apparently it is an individual thing. I also found an HEB location that would sell singles, but not all of them would. I know HEB is not in Dallas but try another grocery chain or a small independent pharmacy as another option. One pharmacy tech gave me a good tip, to try pharmacies near retirement communities or other concentrated areas of seniors as those pharmacies are more likely to sell singles routinely. Many folks have had success at Target stores also.

Here is a link to the savings card. This limits what you pay to $25 per pen. Use the search box upper corner right to search 'lantus savings card', Lantus discount card' , etc.. for many threads with tips for using these successfully.
Get your vet to write a script for a box of 5 pens - or MAY BE FILLED INDIVIDUALLY. Then you can buy them one at a time and have 4 on file to buy when you need them.

AND do NOT let them sell you the pen tips. (most will try to tell you these must be used) You will use your regular syringes and treat the pen like a vial in order to better control the small dosing we all use with our cats.

good luck!
