Updated-Have any kitties been on Flovent and experienced adverse reactions with their eyes??

I am stumped and convinced the Flovent I am giving my Webber for his asthma is causing him to have a really bad reaction with his eyes. The first time it happened was when I did a dose increase from 110mcg to 220mcg. My assumption and the vets agreed that I must have accidentally gotten some of the medication in his eyes while moving the mask from the aerokat.

Long story short.....I used the smallest mask availble with the Aerokat and it fits nice and snug. I actuate the inhaler away from his face (c0vered) and then put it to his face. What has results at least 4 times now are very painful irritated eyes that turn cloudy/milky looking the following few days. So far it has always cleared up and I continued to give his usual dose (3 puffs of 110mcg twice a day). Last night be refused the inhaler and I knew something was wrong. Today I woke up to cat that will not open his eyes and has a clear watery discharge. They appear to be painful because he does not want me to try and wipe them gently with a warm cloth. When I do open his eyes it is hard to get a good look because his third eyelid is in the way........this wasn't much of a long story short was it? Sorry.....

Anyone ever had similar eye issues with out without Flovent?

Flovent contains fluticasone, which should not be gotten in the eyes. That said, if the mask fits well and you are actuating the Flovent away from his face, it seems like it should not be a problem. Is it possible the mask, itself, could be coming close enough to his eyes to irritate them? Whatever the cause, I would definitely take him to the vet asap, if his eyes are that bad they need immediate attention! Prayers and vines for Webber - please keep us posted!

Poor, Webber. This scares me. I have an Aerokat that I am supposed to be getting Willow accustomed to so that we can use an inhaler on her. I sure do not want to cause her new issues.

I agree that I would take him to the vet. Maybe they can at least rule out other possible causes. I don't know. So sorry for you both.

Please don’t let this scare you. I assure you I’ve spoke with many members of different feline asthma support groups and no one has ever seen this occur. One person suggested he could be allergic. I’d like to note that every visit to the vet requires him to be boxed (gas’ed) and even the inhaled medicine they give him for that causes the cloudy eyes for days.

Please don’t let this scare you. I assure you I’ve spoke with many members of different feline asthma support groups and no one has ever seen this occur. One person suggested he could be allergic. Update~ not sure if he was allergic to the Flovent or what but we stopped administering that med and he’s not having those issues (knock on wood...I put nothing past this boy)

Just to reiterate- the mask was always nice and snug around his nose and mouth and far enough away from his eyes that there was no way I was getting it in his eyes. I actuated the inhaler away from him, covered prior to placing the mask on his face. The same thing happens with his eyes when he is gassed at the Vet. If it happens again without giving the inhaler we will see an ophthalmologist. Thanks everyone
