My helper and I did our first home test today. Success! It took 4 sticks, 2 test strips and more hands than we had because Mugsy struggled so much but, we got the blood drop finally without losing it in the struggle and he tested at 129. I started with a paw stick and I'm glad I did if it was this tough. He fought us All the way. Thank you to all that helped with suggestions and encouragement. We did it. :-D :-D cat(2)_steam

Congrats! It will only get better! The main problem is being scared ourselves! Cats know when we are nervous and pick up on it. The calmer you can be, the better it will go. Take lots of deep breaths! Try not to let the cat get agitated as it will only make the BG go up!
Oh and note: that here on FDMB the Rainbow Topic icon is connected with the Rainbow Bridge (which is where kitties are said to go when they they have passed on)... so, best not to use it for other posts, you wil convey the wrong thing! (Check out the FDMB Jargon / Slang guides in the Sticky posts etc...)

Oh...thanks for that Perry...I was just going to tell her about the Rainbow Bridge...many thanks!

Great news about the successful test!!
SO happy for you! God job!

Icon noted and changed...sorry.
You're welcome - I am still learnin here myself - it's an interesting place to be sure! But everyone here does truly seem to have one thing in common: our cats are the reason we are here - and although getting them a better quality of life is defintely priority #1, if that also makes us "beans" feel better, well that is just a very nice bonus!

Hang in there it really WILL get easier, I promise!

129 is a nice low number. When did it come in his cycle? Did you give insulin? What kind and how much insulin are you giving? (Just concerned - that is a good number this early in the game. We don't want him going too low.)

He gets his Vetsulin am shot at about 7am. I picked up the meter etc at the PO and did a test, after reading ALL the instructions, at about 2pm (about 7 hrs) It was more practice than anything. His real home testing will begin when I switch him to Lantus (next week?). He has been in the good range since mid to late July except when I screwed up on food labels. I think the Vetsulin is deteriorating so, I'm glad it has about run out. The Lantus is due in next week.

Fantastic! Lantus will be a good choice. When you get your Lantus, you will probably want to post on the Lantus Insulin Support group page for any dosage advice. viewforum.php?f=9 They will be happy to see that you already have a spreadsheet.
