Went to the vet today. He is concerned about me giving him bp medication on top of all of the other symptoms that we are treating. He did write me a script and I think I want to try. Are there any severe side effects that I should be aware of? My Vet tells me he doesn't think it should hurt him. His bp was at 170 from what I am reading bp normal is 110 to 160? The vet says that he doesn't know if the machine is that accurate? The ER vet said he couldn't get a reading. How reliable are these machines and could I overdose my cat on the bp medication. I will be giving a low dose 1/4 of a pill?

Vicki, Sampson should be fine if it is Amlodipine. Has he ever had a cardio workup done by a cardiologist? If not, I would suggest having one done and making sure his heart is okay and that the bp isn't going high from a heart problem. I know you are in Warren and I believe there is MI Veterinary Specialists Clinic in Southfield. I go to Oakland Vet Referral Service, O.V.R.S., up off of Telegraph. I use Dr. Reipe, Cardio, and Dr. Rice, IM specialist, and then there is Dr. Gearhart, opthamologist. They are all women, all excellent, and great at getting bp readings and eye pressure readings. Hope, Mishka and Vinnie all go there and their ER docs are top notch.
 
Normal bp should be 130, but as the protocol is at the animal hospital where I go, they said they don't start treatment on bp below 200.

They use the Doppler, and it is fairly accurate. Your vet should be able to specify what measuring device he used.
 
In Plumb's Vet Drug book under Amlodipine they state that 160 systolic bp is considered hypertensive. If bp therapy is started immediately some vision may be restored in about 50% of cats. Amlodipine can depress conduction velocity in cardiac muscle and this is why I asked if he has had a cardio workup.
 
No he has not had a cardio work up. He bp was at 170. Should I start this? I have an appt with a vision specialist in the a.m. What if I wait? Would there be harm in giving him 1/4 pill now?

I don't understand why you 'don't want to' give him some insulin.

Those numbers are NOT remission numbers. (186, 224, 380 )

This is not helping his blindness.
 
I agree, but he is having so many issues. IBD is the worst. He may have cancer. He is a transient diabetic and went into hypo shock back in November and I guess I am just scared to death to to it again. The budesonide may be having an adverse effect on his glucose numbers recently, he also had a shot of prednisone a little while back. I will have to start taking readings again more frequently but I am desperately trying to treat one thing at a time and possibly start the insulin again. His numbers before this IBD flare up had been at 126, 106 and 98. I am hoping that his diabetes settles down like before. I am taking him off the Bude for now and trying to treat with Flagyl. But he is NOT a pill taker, HATES IT. Now he has high blood pressure and I can't get him out from under the bed to administer meds. I more than anyone hopes that he makes it, but we can't seem to get a break. I will continue to do everything that I can, but I am doing this alone and it's difficult as you all know. I really appreciate this message board of support it gives me encouragement and help.
