Just to update you all on Ozzie and to say from the bottom of my heart a big Thank you for all the help, love and prayers sent for Ozzie to get well. We thought he might be able to come home today but after speaking to the Doctor he feels another day of closely watching his BG with the higher doses is necessary at this crucial stage of phase 2. Neg ketones again but at 7pm he was given 4.5 units of Lantus and slowly his BG rose to the 400's - he then asked the doctor in the evening to give him short acting insulin to bring it down. Everything is okay, eating, alert, drinking and urinating okay. He is going to raise his insulin a little higher to try and keep him down but it's just getting the right dose. He's worried if he goes up into the 400's and is there for a while we all could be back to square 1 with the ketones back again. Any thoughts or help on this would be much appreciated. My laptop is freezing over and over today so hopefully when I get back today from visiting I can come on without any problem. My thanks again to you all -- Ozzie sends a big thank you as well!

We are keeping Ozzie in our thoughts and prayers and sending lots of healing vines. I hope the dose question can be figured out.

Hope you'll get a good report when you visit Ozzie,

Ella & Rusty

When you see Ozzie today, you might ask the vet to teach you have to give sub-q (subcutaneous) fluids and give you a prescription for getting fluids and the connections for administering the fluids. Hydration is very important in a cat that's been through DKA. The fluids can also help to lower BG levels. You are also able to purchase Humulin R, which is the short acting insulin that the vet is using, without a prescription in most states. If you need help with using R, there are people here who are well versed in it's use.

I'd also keep in mind that Ozzie's numbers may be somewhat inflated from being in the hospital.

Hi Lauren,

I've been where you are with my Balck Kitty. Like Sienne advised, pick up a vial of Humulin R (around here we call it "R") to have on hand.
I've used it and will be happy to help guide you.

Make sure you have plenty of BG test strips, Ketostix as well a supply of some HC (18% or higher) food in the house in the event you need to lift a low number.

If you can, get a copy of his chart; I'm interested to see what the insulin dosages/times/bg results have been during his hospital stay.
also, do you work outside the home?

Just to let you guys know about Ozzie. He is holding his own - BG rose slightly in the 200's before he was due his shot at 7pm - given 4.5 again of Lantus and just called before I head to bed and he is doing okay after his shot. He ate really well when we visited early today - drinking and walking around, the little guy wants to come home I think. A house full of kittens is better than all these tubes and cages....He was given a potassium pill b/c he's low and also a little anemic but he looks so wonderful w/ his eyes back to normal.
My love and thanks from the bottom of my heart and Ozzie's to Venita and DCIN and Linda and LLEF and all of you wonderful people right here on this incredible life-saving internet home - who have given your prayers, thoughts, kind words and financial help towards his care -- you saved his life and I will be forever grateful..pls. pray he does okay when he gets out.
