Update on Mister Mistopheles --- We were totally thrown for a loop! So, here are the events.
He wasn't doing well after coming home from the vet when he was boarded. He wasn't eating, very lethargic. We took him to the vet on Wednesday and they did blood work. It all came back fairly normal. Gave him an anti-nausea medication to see if nausea might be the problem. We saw no difference.
On Thursday Bryan Christian gave him an appetite stimulant in the morning. Again we saw no noticable change. He also seemed to be a little wobbly on his feet and dizzy. We were preparing ourselves for the worse this weekend.
I went out and bought baby food, chicken, sardines, everything you guys suggested.
He didn't eat the baby food, didnt eat the chicken very much, didnt eat anything we tried .... We even had a call into the vet on Friday and Saturday to see if he needed to go back to the vet hospital perhaps.
Then ....THEN....
Then on Saturday we mixed the EZ Complete ( a very very small amount 1/8 tsp) with some sardines --- and it was like he couldn't eat it fast enough! Sardines seems to be our answer! After eating the sardines he ate a little bit of chicken.
On Sunday he started doing even better. He ate some dry kibble (he loved it before he got sick and then shunned it). He ate some Stella & Chewy's Chicken Chicken. He ate some more sardines. Sunday night, his BG was still too low for insulin. He hadn't recieved insulin but maybe once because he wasn't eating all week. Sunday night he hopped up on the bed with us and slept there all night long. He seems much more alert and active.
Today, Monday, his BG was high enough in the morning for insulin so he got 0.5 units. We feel like we might need to start low again until he begins eating on a regular schedule. Bryan Christian gave him sardines with some EZComplete on it. Gobbled it up. Then I gave him some chicken. Gobbled it up.
We know that he is still sick -- I mean he is in kidney failure. It's a progressive disease. But we are so thankful that he is feeling and acting better.
Our next step is to start integrating EZComplete into some ground meat to see if we can get him eating a predictable amount of it to ensure he is getting all the nutrients and vitamins he needs. Bryan Christian even told our vet about the EZComplete and what we were trying to do, and he said that at this point in Mister's life he totally agrees with the EZComplete and how we were approaching his diet.
We don't know what the future holds. We are thankful to have each day with him. We have heard that sometimes towards the end of their life, an animal will "rally" and have a really good few weeks before they pass. Has anyone heard of this? Even if it is this, we are glad to have this time with him.
Our spreadsheet is a disaster because we haven't been keeping track because he hasn't been eating. I added the data from our new Reli-On Prime meter to "Sheet 4" just so we have the records. I'll start doing a better job of keeping track today.
