I posted a few weeks ago about Chauncy having suspected IBD or Lymphoma.

I took him to an internal medicine vet and the suspicion was confirmed via ultrasound - the vet thinks it's more likely Lymphoma due to a few enlarged lymph nodes. He's been on Budesonide for just over a week and it looked like he was improving. A few days in a row he had a darker semi-formed stool. (Prior to that it ranged from liquid to pudding consistency). Then yesterday it was lighter in color and barely formed...yet not as bad as it was before starting the treatment. Any thoughts on this? I was excited because I thought the medication was working, but now I'm back to worrying.

On top of all this, I just discovered that the meter I've been using to do spot checks is completely inaccurate. (Walgreens True Result). I've tested him a few times the past week and thought he was staying just below 200. Then I decided to get some strips for my other meter (Walmart's Relion Confirm) and realized that his blood sugar is wayyyy higher than I thought it was. This morning it was 355! I just started testing his blood sugar at home this summer, but never switched over to the tight regulation method because he started to show symptoms of his lymphoma? IBD? My focus changed to just getting him to eat on a consistent basis. Although I didn't home test other than the occasional spot check, his fructosamine levels always showed that he was well regulated.

Well that all changed when he developed an aversion to his Purina DM dry food. I was never successful at switching him to wet food, but I'm still trying. Now the only dry food he will eat is Fancy Feast Chicken and Turkey. I've tried Evo Salmon and Nature's Variety Limited Ingredient Rabbit Dry Food. No luck. In a panic to get him to eat something, I ended up with the Fancy Feast junk. So, now his blood sugar is creeping up because of this high carb food and probably the effects of the steroid as well.

It's discouraging because he has always been well regulated since being diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago. And because of the inaccurate meter, I had no idea how high his sugar has been for probably the past 2-3 weeks.

Has anyone been in the same boat with losing regulation? I feel overwhelmed since I did not regulate him in the first place. When he was diagnosed, he was hospitalized for 4 days and treated with fast acting insulin, then switched over to Lantus. The vet did the glucose curve in her office.

I've read the information in the Lantus forum and it all looks doable - I guess I'm just feeling overwhelmed dealing with the lymphoma, struggle to change his food, multiple medications, increasing BGs, etc. :(

When you're dealing with other health conditions, or with food issues, our rule of thumb is to adjust the insulin around those.
