I'm so happy I'm almost crying. Salem's vet just called and he no longer has ketones in his urine, so they're happy to discharge him. I'm picking him up at 1:30 and have a long consultation booked with the vet.

I am so over the moon right now!

Great news about Salem!

I haven't seen your other posts, so I hope your vet is all for home testing, and low carb canned foods or a raw diet only, and open to whatever insulin you've decided is best for your Salem!

Good luck!

My vet actually recommended the Lantus, and was all on board with low carb and home testing so I am so happy about that.

I just can't stop crying because of the relief. I feel silly but I'm sure it's not unusual here.

ETA: this wasn't my regular vet, it was the emergency vet. But depending on how my regular vet reacts to this, I may go back to her because she seems very up on the latest in diabetic treatments. I'm going to call around and check.

And a picture I took of him at the vet yesterday:

The first couple of weeks after Pumbaa was diagnosed, I "leaked" a lot! (Leaking is what I call emotions flooding out of my tear ducts.) Not unusual at all!

So glad to hear that your vet is onboard for the testing, etc. That is a relief, too.

I read your post about supplies you had purchased, foods, etc. Good job on all of that! There are other board members in Canada who will be able to help you with what is available up there, food wise and supply wise, so you might want to post your location (town and province) in your profile. That really helps.

Salem is a handsome boy! He'll be happy to be home with his mom this afternoon!

PS: I almost forgot...for testing for ketones, Pumbaa actually allows me to slide a wide tablespoon under him (I call it the "peespoon"), and catch his urine midstream. This is a lot easier than using fish gravel. Try that first in his normal litter box. I wait until Pumbaa is already going, and once I hear the urine hitting the litter, I just slide the spoon under his belly and capture the urine. He looks at me like, "What the hell do you think you're doing? I'm peeing here!" but it doesn't hurt him. *LOL*
