Thanks to all of your for your notes re: my struggles with Skipper. I wanted to update on our specialist visit yesterday. We had to go to see the internal medicine specialist after failing to make any progress over the past 3 months with his diabetes while on ProZinc. He also has chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroid and anemia.

During the 1.5 hour visit, we went over all of his challenges, especially his dietary challenge, since I can't feed him a low-carb/high protein diet because of the kidney disease. We discussed the insulin, anemia and his ultrasounds from January. An inhouse blood glucose test was about 340 (which is the lowest reading he's had in months). We also used the Relion glucometer that you all kindly sent me while in the office, and it read about 360, so they were fairly close. He also had gained 1 lb. since our last vet visit 10 days prior.

The bottom line is that I am going to do a home blood glucose curve this Saturday, testing his blood sugar every 2 hours for 12 hours. We will determine what to do re: his insulin based on that. She may change us to Lantus. She also gave me prescrips for Purina DM and Hills m/d. He has been eating the dry w/d for a while. He will not eat much canned food at all. I bought some of the DM on the way home and he ate it mixed with the w/d, but then threw it up. I may try the m/d this weekend if he continues to throw it up.

Blood and urine testing came back today. Surprisingly, his anemia was very, very slight; all kidney and liver levels were normal. Blood sugar was 318. Urine was clean -- no bacteria. All of this was a surprise to both of us!

The vet asked me where I'd gotten the glucometer and I told her about this website and forum. Thanks again for your good work!

Sounds like a good visit - I know you're relieved about that!

The food issue is going to probably continue to be an issue from what I've seen others say. I changed Grayson's food to Fancy Feast low carb before we started insulin. He'd still give his right paw for some crunchy Kitt-N-Kaboodle, but eventually came around to the FF.

The curve will be very helpful for you. I've gotten very OCD about testing, but it has helped me to see where he goes and with what dose. Keep us tuned in to your progress - good luck!

There is a lot of controversy about the need to feed a low-protein diet for CRF cats.

It seems that phosphorous is a bigger problem. You can add a phosphorous binder to
kitty's food.

My Smokey had CRF, too. I treated aggressively and a phos. binder was one of the
things we did. His CRF was quite well managed until he died of cancer at age 17.5.
