My beloved 15 1/2 year old civvie girl Buttons is in surgery right now having all her teeth removed due to severe gum disease. I put off having it done as long as I could because I was and am terrified I'm going to lose her. Please pray for her, if you don't pray, please think healing thoughts for her. We lost her brother just over a year ago and I'm still devastated. They were born here and I can't imagine life without her too.

(((Liz))), many older cats have dentals and they do just fine. And Buttons may feel a whole lot better without those teeth.
But everyone here understands how very, very scary it is when it is our own kitty going through the procedure....

:bighug::bighug::bighug:Sending well wishes to Buttons and huge hugs to you, dear Liz! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

I'm sad to hear about Buttons' brother. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Prayers and positive vibes for Buttons to sail through her dental and have a quick recovery on the way from the Shire ...

Be sure to keep us posted on how she's getting on. And have some more :bighug::bighug::bighug:.

My little sugar had a dental a few weeks ago and I know how stressed out I was.... so I can imagine how you are feeling. Sending :bighug: :bighug:for you and healing vines for Buttons! :)

My Dottie just went through this. Yes it was scary, but it was worth it. Her mouth is pink and healed, and No More Pain! No more rotten breath, either! Your Buttons will feel so much better.
In the meantime, you need a hug.:bighug::bighug::bighug:

Breathe deep. When she comes home she may be really, really groggy. The vet may have also clipped her claws down close, to prevent her from clawing at her mouth until she heals, so you'll have to watch her if she used her claws to help her climb up on things. And till the anesthesia wears off..confine her so she can't climb at all, because otherwise, she could take a bad fall.

Ok, now go find yourself the biggest chocolate bar, ever. You earned it.

Sending prayers for a quick recovery.

We can all understand your worry! Sending prayers and all healing thoughts to Buttons, hugs and strength to you! Please keep us posted on her progress!

Does Buttons have stomatitis? That's what the vet thinks Sparkle has. He already went through a dental and had lots of extractions, but the infection came back and now they are talking about a full mouth extraction. The problem is, it only works in 50% of cats. That's what the specialist tells me, so she isn't pushing it. As you know also, those kitty dentals cost an arm and a leg. I feel for you and for Buttons. Best, best , best to you both.

Hi everyone. Thank you all so much for all the prayers, thoughts and well wishes. You guys are awesome! Buttons made it thru the surgery and is home. She looks awful, is very, very wobbly, totally out of it and is bleeding/drooling. She's also very cold, it doesn't help that our furnace quit working Friday night and we've been waiting for a part that was supposed to come in today, yeah right! I've got her bundled up with an electric heater pointed at her and am watching her like a hawk, any movement she makes I'm right there. The Vet sent her home with Onsior tablets which we start tomorrow and Buprenorphine liquid which we are supposed to give around midnight and then 2 or 3 x daily. I can't begin to imagine how we're going to give her drops let alone pills with her mouth being a mess. I always used her little front teeth to open her mouth and now no more teeth, but we will do it! What matters is that she made it thru the surgery, that's half the battle. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers for a little while longer.

Thank you Jeanne for warning me about how out of it she was going to be. It's quite frightening to see her like this. How long did it take for your Dottie's gums to heal? I can't wait to see nice pink gums instead of the horrible blood red ones she's had.

I know I've read about stomatitis but right now I can't think what that is, but the Vet has not mentions anything about that. Between IttyBits diabetes and Buttons' teeth the Vet can take a nice vacation on us. I wish you and Sparkle answers and healing.

Well, I think Dottie's gums are still somewhat somewhat tender because she flinched when I touched her jaw today.

Yes, stomatitis doesn't always go away. It is generally thought to be an autoimmune response to plaque but the jury is still out since some cats still have trouble with it.

Stomatitis is an inflammatory problem so you can try to head that off with nutrients that have an anti-inflammatory effect. Omega 3s are good for fighting inflammation .. There are suppliments that contain Omega 3s or you can break open a Mega Red krill oil capsule, and give a tiny drop of that on her food. TINY drop.

Note : sugar/carbohydrates are a prime cause of inflammation.. So try to get your kitty on as little carbs as possible but do that slowly because it will mess with your insulin dosage and kitty's bg can drop sharply.

A few people here have become real experts on the topic of kitty food. Some even feed raw diets. That means almost no carbs at all. You can make your own or buy pre-made.

Right now I am feeding friskies but I want to transition to fancy feast. I started out on fancy feast then read that food changes shouldn't be abrupt.. So I have backpedaled a bit. Eventually I will go to FF exclusively, but if Dottie starts having stomatitis issues again I will find way to eliminate as many carbs as necessary to avoid inflammation .

BTW, Did you know that sugar is almost identical to cocaine in composition? No wonder it is so addictive to both us and our kitties. Gizmo has become very crabby since I cut him back on dry food. He is noticeably depressed at mealtimes so I have had to give him a teeny bit of dry or he becomes downright uncivilized.
If your kitty seem to be developing stomatitis, have your vet do an x-ray. There might have been a tooth fragment (and plaque) left below the gumline. It can be very tiny and yet make a big difference in your cats health.

EEK..almost forgot! If your cat is on antibiotics, you need to get some probiotics into them. Antibiotics kill the 'good guy' bacteria in the gut. That allows the bad guy bacteria to grow out of hand. There are some yogurts that are acceptable sources. And of course all kinds of pills and powders will also help the good guy bacteria to storm the fort and salvage the damage.

Oh, and that Krill oil capsule? Since I take Krill Oil myself, I use a lancet to poke the gel capsule, squeeze out a drop, and then pop the rest of the pill into my mouth. So if you have inflammation too, you can dose a cat and a bean in one blow! And Krill Oil doesn't really taste bad. Not like cod liver oil or other Omega 3 sources.

Buttons is doing great! The wobblys have worn off, she's drinking, peeing and she ate 1/2 jar of baby food this afternoon. We managed the Buprenorphine liquid just fine last night, (made her purr for hours, either because I hurt her or it took her to happy land, not sure which). The pill today was a little more difficult and I know I hurt her but she has forgiven me. IttyBit is on day 12 of his countdown, 2 more to go and it's party time! Roo just got home from the Vet and her blood work is excellent! But with all the excitement about the blood work we didn't get an answer about her ears. Will have to call tomorrow.
And we have heat! We might be broke but this is a happy household tonight.

Yeah! Happy dance on all counts!

When Menace's vet called me to tell me she did fine through surgery, she also told me Menace was entertaining the staff (she can be quite vocal) and really enjoying her meds so I'm betting Buttons is enjoying her med too!

Woot! I am So glad that Buttons is feeling better! Now let the healing begin! :bighug:

Glad your other two kitties are doing well also. And you have heat again! That's gotta feel good!

o_OWhew... You had a rough stretch of it, for sure.

Now perhaps you can begin to recover...
