As's numbers are all over the place. What am I doing wrong? I know I should test more often but the time constraints make it hard. What treats do you give after testing?

How often are you feeding? Looks like Ash doesn't like waiting for the meat-cicles to thaw out, little stinker  I see you're looking into an auto feeder. I am currently testing out this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005POODL8/?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20 I like it because it has clips on the top and I don't need all 6 trays, but I figure I can put the food in opposite trays. I'm hoping that will make it less tempting to break into.

Try not to get discouraged - hang in there!

I feed at 6am and insulin at 6:30am then again at 6pm to eat and shoot at 6:30. I have left the frozen FFC and he eats it right away. I am out of the house 7:00-5:00. I have asked my husband if he will feed during the day (but, he has a habit of forgetting. He only tolerates them.) and he said he would as long as he is home. That leaves me with unreliable feeding. I increased the amount of food for him (actually all of them). I am looking at the feeders. I know the 2 door one is out for me. Ash is smart when it comes to food. He would pop it open no problem. I like the 6 chamber ones but I have very little money and would probably need more than one because of them all fighting for one dish. I am just so confused. I will have to try a different "snack or treat" to use. I only have terrible dry treats and leftover dry food. I have had to use his old Purina DM as a treat. Would boiling chicken be a better treat? Will more meals help? If I don't use DM as a treat will his numbers lower? confused_cat

Let me know how well that one works It is one i have been looking at.

Are your cats the scarf n barf types? do they eat all they can and bring it back up shortly after?

They all do need to feed more times than that and it can be one reason your boys numbers are crazy. Plus the fact that he is still starving because of the FD makes him eat anything and everything. For now- feed at 6 am and the same amount at 6:30 am and leave out the frozen- more than you think you would need b/c he probably eats a lot of the food (and they might not get any) until his numbers improve showing that Ash is finally getting stabilized. He will slow down but only once he gets better. Can you place Ash in another room with a dish until he starts slowing down? I don't know how social he is with the others.

If your husband is supposed to be home give him a call around noon and ask if the food is gone and if it is can he replace it. His habit of forgetting doesn't seem to be a habit but something more along the lines of passive/aggressive for something not his (unless he is twin to the absent minded professor :-D )

The DM will bring his numbers up so if you could use boiled chicken instead that would be great- 0 carbs in chicken and lots of protein.

He was "scarfing and barfing" and he does if he eats more than 1 can at a time. I can try to feed another at 6:30 but would that be to much food and make him barf? My husbands memory is because being blown up in Afghanistan. I cant call my husband during the day :-( (he has no phone ATM [times are tough]). Again because times are tough we are staying at the in laws and the cats are locked up during the day in my bedroom because there is a cat hater and a cat eating dog. How many cans are you thinking a day? I know I cant keep bringing up the money, but it is a big bump in the road. I am currently giving between 7-10 cans right now. I am going to give him chicken from now on. Any suggestions is appreciated.

Regarding the post-test treats, a small piece of boiled chicken is fine carb-wise, as long as you've got access to it.

However, I find tinned tuna to be a whole lot cheaper, and much more convenient. I've discovered it works wonders to distract my little Cleo cat from being annoyed with me - as soon as I open the fridge she forgets how pissed off she is at being spiked yet again, and gets all excited about the prospect of the tuna.

Tinned tuna is pretty much entirely carb free; just make sure you buy the unsalted stuff in water, not in oil, and chose a dolphin friendly brand if you can.

Now I understand- more shell shocked than absent-minded. I've a few friends like that and know it will take a while. I am sorry to hear that and I hope you are able to use/involve the VA system as they are a really big resource and willing to help.

Is the cannage split between all kitties? If they are FF then that would be the 3oz cans which is 21-30oz for all cats and might not be enough for Ash (mine ate 18-20oz/day until she got regulated and that leaves the others splitting the remainder which might leave them hungry). I would then try the cheapest that you can do right now that has a good meal. Myself I do Wal-marts Special Kitty which comes in not only the 5.5oz (.43) but the 13oz (.70) cans- Mixed Grill, Supper Super, Chicken and Tuna diner pate are all around 5% and I am checking on the tuna supper but since it is lowest carb in most other kinds I am guessing it is low here, too. Right now it is all my cat will eat and FF is around .65-.70 cents per can here. And for most of us money is a big bump in the road

Boil the chicken, don't add salt and cut it into cubes and freeze all but a few days worth at a time. My cat loves the tuna- I open a can and ad water to it and give her some juice and tuna each day with her meds. If I run out of juice i just add more water and squish it all with a fork until it is all pale water instead of clear. And let the other cats have some as well to keep the jealousy at bay  :-D .

Good luck with a difficult situation.

Just wanted to let you know I tried the feeder yesterday and it worked great! The particular one I have kind of howls and screeches as it turns so I am going to return it for a quieter one - same model. On a side note, my husband noticed there are no less than 6 typos on the outside of the box :-| I hope Ash's numbers flatten out for you soon!
