I am new to this site. My cat Alley was diagnosed with diabetes on 01/11/11. She is almost nine years old and a really sweet cat. I can't seem to give her her insulin injections by myself, which I need to do sooner or later. Right now my son is helping me. I am 75 and don't move around all that great anymore. Alley gets two shots a day, one at 6:50am and again at 6:50 pm. I tried the feeding idea and she just takes off. Most of the time she doesn't even feel the shots, my son holds her and I inject. Any one have any good ideas I could try I would really appreciate it.
Janet and Alley I also posted a note on the injection site.

Re: newbie Letitia and Alley

Well Letitia and Alley to the FDMB family,

One thing you might be able to try to get Miss Alley to hold still for you is to wrap her up like a big kitty burrito. When I first adopted my sugarcat Maxwell, he was pretty squirmy at first, since he didn't know me well and had no reason to trust the sanity of this stranger that wanted to poke him in the ear to test and then stick him again with a needle full of insulin. So those first few days I just took a big beach towel covered with it so only his head was showing, wrappped him up like a burrito and then put him between my legs on the bed. After a few days of this and him always getting treats for being a good boy, I could skip the wrapping and just go ahead and test, and give him his treat. Didn't have to give shots anymore by that time, as he was already in remission. Now all I have to do is shake the container of test strips and tell him we need to do ears and he jumps right up wherever I put is testing "blankie".

Hope that helps,

Mel, Max & The Fur Gang.

Re: newbie Letitia and Alley

Welcome to FDMB the best place to help you help your kitty.

Sometimes the insulin can be real cold and will sting, maybe Alley is remembering a sting? If you hold the insulin in your fingers to warm it slightly, it wont sting.
Also how much is Alley's dose? Kitties will come to know that the insulin makes them feel better, but if the dose is too high or too low, it might make them feel crappy. Do you hometest Alleys blood sugar? What type of insulin are you using?
Please read the FAQ page it will help.
These are just some ideas. I dont know if any of them fit your kitty. Hometesting will tell you if the amount of insulin is the correct dosage. I hope this helps

Again Welcome
