Uncle Charlie's Updates_2

@Suzanne & Darcy

I just realized I have a few cans of Fancy Feast Tuscany Medleys that are 20 carbs. I looked it up for my other cat the other day, since it's her favorite, and decided to wean her off of those. But since FF is the brand they prefer, I'll keep that for Charlie.

His current reading is now 72. LC snack and 30 min test?

Yes. Let’s see if he can keep above 68

On Sept. 2, I start training for a work-from-home position and the training is 9am-2 pm, M-F for 2 weeks, "100% participation required".

I'm a little worried about managing Charlie if he has another day like this, since I will be tied to my computer except for a few breaks.

Oh that would be nice if you could work from home, wouldn’t it. What kind of work is it? Let’s see what happens between now and the end of the month (coming up very quickly). Do you live alone? Nobody else there to test or feed him?

No, I live with my spouse, who has been working from home since Covid and is tied to the computer from 11 am - 8 pm...and is squeamish about all things poky and needle and bloody. >.< But is willing to help for sure with feedings and such.

His regular insulin shots are at 9 am/pm. So no trouble doing that myself. After my training I can set my own hours actually, so it's really just that two weeks I'm worried about.
So you will have to move his shot time to a little bit earlier if the training starts at 9
Man he's only up 2 points, 75.
but he is stable. So will he eat another spoonful of some food?

Yes, I plan to start moving him by 15 mins this week to get to 8 am.

He sure did eat. Lols.

Is there anything I can do to soothe his ears? They must be sore.
Are you alternating ears? And moving up and down the ear a little bit so that you aren’t poking the same place? I am sure you are. Some people use coconut oil on the ears. I have used aloe vera as well.

Yes, I am, I try hard not to hit the same place all the time. He has a few scabs. I think how my ear might feel if it were being poked like that so much.

Cat ears are pretty tough and outdoors they fight and tear up their ears, but I do understand. I feel the same way. He needs a break. Hopefully he will rise and you can leave him alone for a long time this afternoon.

An additional bit of good news.

My pet insurance approved and paid my claim, I got back over half of what I paid for his diagnostic visit. So now I can claim his insulin and supplies. I long ago met the deductible. Another huge sign of relief.

Ok, I have a question …
Uncle Charlie dropped below 90 on the AM cycle of 8/23 and again in 8/24 but the dose remained at 2.5u. Wouldn’t both of those instances warranted a reduction given SLGS?

If I recall, I believe @Suzanne & Darcy recommended a reduction on 8/23 but it wasn’t taken. I’m wondering if that might have been an oversight??

With the SLGS dosing method, I believe every time Uncle Charlie drops below 90, an immediate 0.25u reduction should be taken the next cycle. Suzanne, is that still correct or are there additional nuances in this case? Just trying to keep up…. :)

Lemonade. I've had others over the years but this one had the best bang for the buck this time.
I’ve heard of them (funny name so I remembered it.) I have Trupanion on three of my cats. I just filed a claim this evening for one of my Siamese so we will see what happens. It’s hard to figure out the diagnosis because it’s just really that she got sick and would not eat. We did bloodwork and her hematocrit was high and a few other things, but she did return to normal after a few more days with no treatment. We will see.

I think a reduction was skipped and we already talked about it (over the weekend) and subsequently the reduction was taken. And today obviously he earned another one. 🙂 when I get back home I will look again at what specific days you mentioned. I do recall mentioning a missed reduction and after that he did pretty well but then we subsequently reduced and then again.

And yes. Right now with Charlie following SLGS and earning lots of reductions, we are reducing when he drops below 90 per SLGS. I think it was an oversight because Emerie is new to the protocol and wasn’t aware of the reduction point.
