Hi All - and particularly to Elizabeth and Diana our regular correspondents!

We're now between 5 and 6 weeks post dx and some great news - Moot the Boot has been doing really well. 10 days ago we were on 3.5 units of caninsulin twice daily with numbers between 8 and 25. His numbers have been steadily dropping, and we have been testing frequently and consequently his insulin has dropped gradually too with the help of our vet. The last 2 days he's been lower than 10 on the glucometer all day each day on just one unit of insulin per 12 hours and in the main between 4 and 7 which is just right isn't it?? We have a much brighter and active cat on our hands. Too early to count any chickens yet but the vet seems tentatively hopeful that, in her words, he may be 'one of the lucky ones'. Even if he needs to stay on the juice its great to know that he's in the safe zone and we can keep monitoring him to make sure he stays that way.

When we last went to the vet we heard a sad story of another local cat whose owner couldn't bring him or herself to inject the cat - so it had to go into the vet weekly for blood tests. To anyone who is reading this and who is debating whether they can do it I would suggest that they give it a try - its not something that anyone wants to do - but you'd be surprised how both you and your cat get used to it, and also that seeing the difference in their behaviour and happiness is hugely rewarding.

Thanks again everyone and we'll keep updating. It might be a useful story for other caninsulin users if nothing else.

This is lovely news! I think you will be a great inspiration to other diabetic members from across the pond! We tend to prefer Lantus, Levemir and ProZinc, but the last few members - most particularly from England - have done well with Canninsulin. I don't know if the formula changed, but it seems to work much better than it did just a few years ago. And since it is what you have to work with, it is very encouraging that it is working well!

That's great news, Catherine - and a great post! :-D

And I agree with Sue that this will be really encouraging news for those who have to use Caninsulin.

Here's hoping that Mootle will turn out to be one of the lucky ones who can soon be diet-controlled (fingers and paws crossed for you here! dancing_cat )

Well done Catherine, that's good to hear. You've done a fantastic job and I hope it stays this way.
Maybe you could pop onto the board now and then and post some encouragement to others starting out on their FD journey - this is such a great place to come for support at every stage and can be a life-saver.

Catherine, me again....

Just wondering about the person your vet saw who didn't want to inject their cat. Is the cat still alive.....?

Presumably they live locally to you. I'm just wondering whether it might be possible - through your vet - to offer friendly support via a phone call or even a meet-up in person.... You may be able to help them to decide to treat their cat... You now know, first hand, what the benefits of insulin treatment can be... cat_pet_icon

That is a great idea. I will ask the Vet about doing that. Every cat deserves the best care possible.

A 'First' for Monty this morning - his pre-shot score of 5.5 was sufficient for the vet to say its a 'no insulin' day today - at least until tonight :) it will be interesting to see how he copes without it. Fingers crossed!!

Wow - 5.5 pre-shot is an excellent, normal number at what I presume was +12? There is a number at which you would never shoot, but I can't remember what it is and it may vary from cat to cat and how often you are testing.
Yes, it will be interesting to see what he goes up to with no insulin - it's all a guessing game, as you have found out. Some days are different to others for no apparent reason and you just have to keep on your toes!
Diana

A decent day - without insulin he was 10.5 tonight so all in all not a bad effort from the boy!! Back on 1 unit tonight and we will see how he does in the morning.

10.5 isn't bad at all, Catherine, great stuff. He must be feeling so much better
Keep up the good work!
Diana
