Hi All - and particularly to Elizabeth and Diana our regular correspondents!
We're now between 5 and 6 weeks post dx and some great news - Moot the Boot has been doing really well. 10 days ago we were on 3.5 units of caninsulin twice daily with numbers between 8 and 25. His numbers have been steadily dropping, and we have been testing frequently and consequently his insulin has dropped gradually too with the help of our vet. The last 2 days he's been lower than 10 on the glucometer all day each day on just one unit of insulin per 12 hours and in the main between 4 and 7 which is just right isn't it?? We have a much brighter and active cat on our hands. Too early to count any chickens yet but the vet seems tentatively hopeful that, in her words, he may be 'one of the lucky ones'. Even if he needs to stay on the juice its great to know that he's in the safe zone and we can keep monitoring him to make sure he stays that way.
When we last went to the vet we heard a sad story of another local cat whose owner couldn't bring him or herself to inject the cat - so it had to go into the vet weekly for blood tests. To anyone who is reading this and who is debating whether they can do it I would suggest that they give it a try - its not something that anyone wants to do - but you'd be surprised how both you and your cat get used to it, and also that seeing the difference in their behaviour and happiness is hugely rewarding.
Thanks again everyone and we'll keep updating. It might be a useful story for other caninsulin users if nothing else.
