Well, it's been a long time since I last posted so it may well be that nobody remembers 'Elizabeth and Bertie' from the UK. But I thought it was high time I got back in touch!

Bertie is 13 years old now and has been diabetic for five and half years. He had a check up at the vets this week. Vet seems astonished that he is doing so well. He's never had a diabetic cat live so long after diagnosis! Initially the vet was extremely skeptical about my decision to blood-test Bertie every day and to do his curves at home. But now he seems to trust that I'm doing an OK job! So, for those out there who are struggling to convince their vet that hometesting etc are good things to be doing, I'd say 'just give it time'... After a while your vet may see that you are correct in what you're doing...

I actually stopped posting on the board because (despite my best efforts) Bertie remained unregulated, and I felt a bit of a failure, even though Bert's general health has been good. So, I'd like to reassure anyone out there who can't get their cat regulated that a good quality of life IS still possible. Bertie is evidence of that. In fact though, Bertie is closer to regulation now than he's ever been. We switched to Hypurin Bovine PZI early this year and he's responding really well to it. His numbers have been better - and more stable - than ever before. And for many days during the summer he managed on just one shot a day. (He's always had a 'spluttering pancreas'...)

I must thank the people on the FDMB site, wholeheartedly. I never would have learned to home test without help from the people on this forum, and without that Bertie would have been dead a long, long time ago... As it is, he's sitting next to me while I type this message...

Thanks everyone!

Elizabeth (and Bertie!) xxx
