Hi Friends,

Just wanted to say a HUGE thank you to helping get my little guy into remission. He has been insulin free in over 2 weeks now and his readings have been consistently & below 100. Yay! He has got so much life & vigor again & I am amazed! To be on death's door a month ago, I am so grateful for this time we have together & this board was such a huge help with all the support & wealth of knowledge.

I only have a couple of questions for anyone who can chime in.

1st. How much food is he supposed to intake. We do ff classics & he's 12 lbs. He usually gets 1 1/2 cans a day but I'm fearful that he's not being feed enough.

2nd. Do I need to still test for keytones? I have the strips but with his numbers being low- I haven't tested.

Cat Info has an entire section on weight management and estimating calorie counts. Can you feel every point on his spine? Can you feel his ribs? Does the skin tuck in under his belly near the hind legs? There should be muscle along the spine and a little softness over the ribs with an observable 'waist'. Take a look at this abody Condition Scoring Chart for visuals to use in comparison.

See my signature link for some additional assessments you may wish to make. Tracking weight, appetite, thirst, urine output, and fecal output can give you clues very quickly when something changes. A good rule of thumb is if something suddenly changes, go to the vet. Another good rule of thumb is if you collect data and see a gradual change over time (other than normal growth and development in a kitten or pregnant queen), again, check with a vet.

Congrats on the remission! :RAHCAT

I don't have any advice on the feeding - that's still something I'm trying to figure out right now, too! You don't need to check for ketones, though. You only need to check for ketones if blood sugars are above renal threshold (above 180 to 200, I believe).
